Hi All

I have just joined SCDL in July 2008. Have opted for PGDBA (HR). I am
planning to take dual specialization. Can you ppl suggest which
specialization to take with HR? Which combination with HR would be
beneficial? Some ppl have suggested HR + Marketing. What are the
prospects for HR + CRM and HR+Finance? Inputs from seniors will be
highly appreciated.

Thanks
Anamika

Hi Anamika,

Welcome to SCDL as well as this vibrant group of vibrant people like
you.

I would assume that you will be geeting your questions answered by
your experieneced seniors. If you browse thru the group messages, you
will see a link for an excel sheet which contains the list of all
members with their contact numbers and Specialization, that would help
you in reaching to the people on 1 to 1 basis.

Coming to your query, which I'll try my best to answer, but at the end
of the day, the decision remains with you. To guide you further, I've
couple of queries to you which if you could answer faster, it would be
easy for me to answer quickly:

Q1: What stream or background you are from (science/commerce/arts etc)
Q2: Do you have a basic understanding of the job profile of Marketting
manager/CRM Manager/HR Manager/Finance Manager?
Q3: Which are/field interest you most?
Q4: Are you working or Do you have working experience? If you have
work Exp, in which Industry?

I'm really happy to see that atleast someone is trying something,
which I always wanted to do, but never the less, sooner the better.

Waiting for your reply.

~~~Amar
Hi Amar
Thanks for the reply. To answer your questions:
Q1: I am from Engineering background (B.E. (Instrumentation and
Control))
Q2: I have some idea about the job profiles of HR/ Marketing
manager...but not much for CRM/ Finance. Of these, what I have heard
is that Marketing Mgr needs a good idea of Sales also. Basically,
Sales + Mktg go together But, personally, I don't find Sales jobs much
interesting. I was basically interested in HR+Finance or HR+CRM...but
some ppl have suggested me that HR+Fin combination is not of much use
as these two are unrelated. Also, can you pls describe the job
profiles of CRM Mgr. I thought HR+CRM can be related as both are
related with people management. Pls give your opinion.
Q3: I am good at Science, but HR/ project management/ people mgmt
interest me. Since you are doing PGDBA (Fin), can you tell me whether
commerce/Eco background is absolutely necessary for coping with Fin.
stream subjects. I don't have any exposure to these subjects...so, am
a bit sckeptical abt taking up Fin.
Q4: I am currently working in IT industry...have 3.5 yrs work exp.
Thanks
Hi Anamika,
Directly coming to ur questions:
CRM - Customer Relationship Manager (basically works very close with
sale and support after sales team to see the business is aligned with
the goals of the company). You can also see CRM as Customer Retention
Manager. You need to deal with queries and issues which come out of
escalations. So, your responsibilities increases in terms of holding
your customer to maximum possible time with the products of the
company.
I believe, HR+CRM would be best suited combination. I asked ur
background to understand if you are frm commerce and also needed to
know ur interest in the various specialization.
So, after all permutations and combinations, I would suggest you to go
with HR+CRM. Here, when I say u need to work closely with Sales and
Support after Sales teams, it doesn't mean that u should know how to
sell or market a product, but rather when a customer has issues with
the product you shall be able to handle his/her queries, so that his
faith on the product and services of the company remains intact and he
can further refer the products of your company to some one else, thus
increasing the sales volume of your product without advertiesment.
I'm not from Finance/Economics background, hence I certainly feel that
if you have this background, this really helps in scoring marks, but
if you have interest in these areas, as I have, its easy to understand
the broader business perspective and hence as manager you would be
able to take better decisions.
You have very good industry exp background, could you please let me
know which function you are in (example Development/support/mainframe/
Chip designing/Quality Assurance/Analyst etc)
I hope this answers your queries.
Happy Teaming !!!
Hi Amar
Excellent detailed reply....thanks a lot. Even, I was of the opinion
that HR+CRM makes logical sense and would be a good combination. To
answer your question...I was in Support for around 1 year in the
beginning, then, I have had several roles like developer/ Analyst and
currently also in Quality Assurance.
Thanks
