Dear SCANZ Members,
Many of you will know that I have spent time over the past 3 years or so researching and writing a manuscript on the pioneer crystallographers in Australia and New Zealand and the role they played in the establishment of the "Bush Crystallographers", the SCA and then SCANZ. I presented a short summary of the progress to date at Crystal 34 in Bendigo in December 2023.
It was an absolute pleasure to interview many of these pioneers in researching the early days and, along with their fascinating insights, some provided important copies of documents relating to key developments in the Society, for which I am very grateful.
The book that has resulted from this work includes descriptions of the many achievements of the Society and its members over this period including, inter alia, the funding for and design of the Australian Synchrotron and the OPAL research reactor, the organisation and running of the IUCr Congresses in Perth in 1987 and Melbourne in 2023, the establishment of FASTS, the ANBF, AsCA, and the production of 81 Newsletter since 1980.
Where records exist, descriptions of the programs and key speakers from most of the 35 Crystal meetings are provided, dating from 1961, along with summaries of the governance, membership and finances of the Society over all five decades of its existence.
The book is available on
amazon.com.au. It has the title "
Reflections on the first 50 years of the Society of Crystallographers in Australia and New Zealand" and appears under my name, Roderick J Hill.
With best wishes to all, Rod
