Dear all,

Those of you who attended the SCANZ Business meeting at Crystal35 will be aware that a new SCANZ Sci-Comm committee has been formed! We’d like to introduce ourselves – the committee for the next term will be Rosemary Young (Australian Synchrotron), Bronte Johnstone (Uni of Melbourne) and myself Helen Maynard-Casely (ANSTO), with much support additionally from Stuart Batten (Monash Uni) who will be part of our committee meetings as a consultant.   Going forward we have many plans - there will more detail in the SCANZ newsletter next year - but of course we would always love to hear from the community at anytime if you have events/ideas that you would like support for.

We currently have two opportunities for SCANZ members to get more involved.  The first is that we are seeking to have people in each state and territory who are the custodians of a ‘Crystal-A-Con in a box’ – a Crystallography Outreach kit that can be used for school visits/science festivals/open days.  We of course will provide training and ideas of how to run these (and the box with all the resources!).  Secondly, we are looking for a new member of the wider committee.  If you are interested in either of these or just want to be kept more in the loop with the Sci-Comm committee activities, please fill out the form here.

Why a Sci Comm committee?

The establishment of the Sci-Comm committee is a legacy project (Bragg Your Pattern; braggyourpattern.com) from our hosting of the 26th IUCr Congress in Melbourne in 2023.  The committee has been established to continue arranging regular events to communicate crystallography to the public, with a particular focus on regional audiences.  The idea is to take advantage of SCANZ’s tradition of holding Crystals meetings in regional locations to reach audiences that would otherwise not have many visiting scientists.  Current activities by the committee (Stuart Batten, Rosemary Young, Bronte Johnstone, Helen Maynard-Casely (and supported by former Bragg Your Pattern committee members Emily Furlong and Bryce Mullens)) include arranging school visits in conjunction with Crystal meetings (as recently done with Crystal35) and distribution of crystal structure kits from the giant diamond model constructed at IUCr2023 last year.  The committee would welcome other SCANZ members who wish to be involved in the activities thereby also providing a further opportunity for engagement of members within the society.   At present our plans are to continue running activities under the ‘Bragg Your Pattern’ banner, a project whose audience is predominately primary school age – but of course would welcome input form the community on future plans.

Best wishes,

Helen, Rosemary, Bronte and Stuart
