Dear SCANZ member,

If you are interested, there is a 1-day (free) total scattering workshop at USyd following IUCr:

Total scattering analysis of local structure in functional materials

A workshop introducing the latest tools and techniques for analysing diffraction data beyond conventional crystallography

Thursday 31 August 2023

F09 (Madsen Building) ACMM Lecture Room 236

The University of Sydney

Many of the properties of functional materials depend on local deviations from their long-range average atomic structures: vacancies, interstitials, mixtures, dislocations etc. Unfortunately, conventional crystallographic analysis of X-ray (and electron and neutron) diffraction data is inherently only sensitive to the average structure. Conventional crystallography can be used to make inferences about local structure, but not to model it directly. Total scattering analysis is a different approach to fitting diffraction data that can directly model local structure.

Total scattering analysis is less widely used than conventional crystallography, but recent advances in instrumentation and software are making it much more accessible. This workshop brings together seven world-leading experts in the field to introduce total scattering analysis methods, explain how to get started, and present the latest developments and important results. It is open to all interested researchers and there is no registration fee.
