Dear developers,

The translation team of "Arman High Foundation" is ready to translate the interface of ScanTailor to Armenian. If the development is still going on and you are interested in our suggestion, please, answer to this message and the program will be added to the translation list.

Best wishes

1) If you can add a link of the experimental version to the "downloads" page at the official site, then we will translate this version.

I can't do that myself, since scantailor.org is maintained by other people. While I could theoretically ask them to add such a link, I'd rather not do that, as Scan Tailor Experimental is not in a finished state, despite being quite usable.

2) If you consider it not deserving to be represented and/or can't or don't want to add a link to it, then we can translate the official one. Keeping in mind that you no longer have a build environment set up to make another version, which would include the new language, we can remove all all other languages and left only the Armenian and compress the files to an archive (since the program works as portable). So it will make an only Armenian version, which you can add to the official site, or if you don't want/can't, we can publish this version in our own blog.

If you don't mind distributing a re-packaged version of Scan Tailor yourself, then you don't even have to remove other languages. Just drop a "scantailor_hy.qm" file into the "translations" folder. Normally, *.qm files are produced from *.ts files during the build process, but you can also do that yourself in Qt Linguist with File -> Release.

Another technical question: the installer doesn't ask about the language during the installation and the program doesn't let to change the language from the settings. What is the implemented method of choosing the language of interface?

It just uses the system language. Look for "Regions and Languages" in Windows Control Panel.

Since you are making a new translation, start by renaming scantailor_untranslated.ts into scantailor_hy.ts. If you'd like to consult other translations, open the corresponding *.ts file in Qt Linguist *after* opening scantailor_hy.ts. That will open another translation "on top" of the one you are working on.

Finally, let me remind you again that you need Qt Linguist 4.x for the official Scan Tailor version. You need this installer:

So we decided to work with the official version. We took a .qm file from the "translations" folder of the latest v.0.9.11.1 and translated it. We didn't use the corresponding file from the https://github.com/scantailor/scantailor/releases/tag/RELEASE_0_9_12_1 because it had all the same lines plus many not applicable ones. Even when we deleted the "obsolete" tags from it, and translated some lines (like "Do you want to save the project?", buttons "OK, Discard, Cancel", etc.) the program didn't use them. The translation is over, but there are still some lines that we didn't manage to translate. So at the moment the we are testing what we got. Will finish soon.
If you know how to translate the residual lines, please tell us.

The standard dialog buttons, such as "OK", "Cancel", "Save", "Discard" unfortunately can't be easily translated, as those come drom the GUI toolkit rather than the application itself. Translating those would require some source code changes, which is unfeasible at the moment, as there are no developers that I am aware of working on the project.

What about the method of choosing the language of interface, to be honest, we find it not the best one, because many users live outside of their countries of origin due to many reasons, so they use the local time and region. Is there a way to sharpen the focus on adding the feature to select the language from Settings if the development goes on?

Choosing a language in the UI may indeed be useful to some people, though again, there are no developers working on the project to implement it.

So we'll, of course, send you the scantailor_hy.qm (and .ts) to use in case of future development, but to create an only one language version, we think to change all translations with the Armenian ones (with corresponding endings), in order to make it work despite the region.

That still won't work if the system language is English or one of the languages Scan Tailor wasn't translated to. Although, you if you create a scantailor_en.qm (it doesn't exist as there is no need to translate from English to English), at least English will be covered.

As for sending the *.ts and *.qm files, please post the *.ts one to this mailing list. The *.qm one is not necessary, since it's meant to be automatically built from the *.ts one.
