Dear Dr Burrows,

I hope that this email finds you well. My name is Maggie Pavleszek and I am a PhD researcher at the University of York. I am one of the co-organizers for this year's Norse in the North conference to be held at the University of York.

Norse in the North is an annual one-day conference for postgraduate and early career researchers dedicated to Viking and Medieval Studies. As a collaboration between the universities of Durham, York, and Leeds, Norse in the North has, since its inception in 2012, fostered an international and interdisciplinary research community that provides postgraduate and early career scholars with opportunities for personal and professional development.

I am writing to ask if you might distribute our call for papers to your postgraduate students (MA, MPhil, PhD). I have included a text-only version (below) as well as a digital poster (attached) for your convenience. The registration link for the event (which will be open to everyone) will be made available soon via the Norse in the North website.

Please let me know if you have any questions or if you need anything further from me at this time. We look forward to welcoming you to the University of York in May!

Best wishes,
Maggie

Norse in the North Conference - Power and Powerlessness in Old Norse Literature and Culture
31 May 2025 –  K/133, King's Manor, University of York

Abstract Deadline - Tuesday, 18 March 2025

Keynote Speaker: Professor Gareth Lloyd Evans (St. John's College, University of Oxford)

The dynamics of power in Old Norse literature and culture remain the source of productive interdisciplinary conversations. Concepts of power, powerlessness, and the representations of both underpin examinations of gender, politics, religion, burial practice and literature of the Viking Age. Power in the domestic and the social space, in the gendered space, in the realms of manuscript preservation and publication, and in representations of religious practice often necessitate that certain communities and persons be left without a sense of power. How do we see and interpret power and powerlessness in the Old Norse world? How might feelings of powerlessness be assuaged? How might representations of power shifts and changes enrich our understanding of the Viking Age?

The 2025 Norse in the North conference at the University of York seeks to facilitate interdisciplinary examinations of power, powerlessness and the permeability of such dynamics in Old Norse literature and culture.

Abstract Submission Instructions:

We invite proposals for 15-20 minute papers from current postgraduate students (MA, MPhil, PhD) from the full spectrum of textual, historical, and theoretical approaches to premodern and medieval Scandinavian studies. Please submit a title and an abstract of 250 words, along with an accompanying short biography to norseinthen...@gmail.com by Tuesday, 18 March 2025.

The registration link to attend the event will be distributed very soon via our website (norseinthenorth.wordpress.com).
