Ilove batts. I love to buy them and pet them, spin them and knit them. I especially love striped batts. Do I want long runs of color or supershort ones? Do I want the colors clear or blended? Each decision leads to a very particular yarn.

HOMEWORK: Prior to class, spin two samples of singles yarn, approx. 1.0 ounces each, your choice of fiber. Samples may be spun on a wheel, e-spinner, or spindles. These samples will need a lazy Kate/spindle Kate/equivalent for plying.

STUDENTS MUST BRING: Spinning wheel in working order (e-spinners with battery packs are welcome), at least one empty bobbin for plying, handspun samples on bobbins or spindles (see homework notes), lazy kate or equivalent

Yegads. The speed and power of such a vortex depends on how quickly the air in the middle can rise, which in turn draws in air from farther out; as that air spins and falls in the rotation speeds up, tightening the vortex and magnifying it. As you can see in the fire, spurts of flame leap up the inside of the vortex, clearly giving it more strength. The sound and speed of it are enthralling.

Note: The title of this post is a joke; in general the Coriolis force only acts on far larger scales, so I would think a vortex like this (such as a dust devil) is just as likely to spin clockwise as counterclockwise. It would be interesting to see some statistic on this, though!

They managed almost three more hours than the current record holder for the Longest running mechanical spinning top, which is held by TOSY Robotics JSC (Vietnam) with a time of 24 hours 35 minutes 15 seconds.

However, the record for Longest running mechanical spinning top is only available for commercially available spinning tops. Perhaps breaking this record is next on the horizon for Fearless Toys and Breaking Toys Ltd!

Felix Baumgartner, the world's first supersonic skydiver, has admitted he was "terrified" and feared he would black out as he spun violently out of control 39 kilometres above the Earth during his death-defying leap from the edge of space.

Baumgartner, 43, said pressure built up in his head as he reached a top speed of 1341.97km/h. His 100-strong support team on the ground, including his mother, Eva, and his girlfriend, Nicole Oetl, had their hearts in their mouths as he spent 35 seconds fighting to contain a "death spin" which, had it got worse, risked causing the blood vessels in his brain and eyes to burst.

The Austrian stuntman, who did not look down before he jumped, said: "The exit was perfect, then I started tumbling. I thought I'd get it under control, but then it really started. I really picked up speed, it got very violent. It was really brutal at times.

"In that situation, when you spin around, it's like hell and you don't know if you can get out of that spin or not. Of course it was terrifying. I was fighting all the way down because I knew that there must be a moment where I can handle it. For some reason, that spin became so violent, over all axes, and it was hard to know how to get out of that spin."

Describing how he struggled to stabilise himself during a total of four minutes and 20 seconds in free fall, Baumgartner added: "It's like swimming without touching the water, and it's hard because every time it turns you around you have to figure out what to do. So I was sticking my arm out, then it became worse.
