Elastic Load Balancer Howto?

I'm having trouble getting our elastic load balancer working. Hoping
that someone has a bit more detail on what I might be missing.

I have done the following:
- created a new farm
- have an app server in the farm
- added elastic load balancer option to the app server
- added listener and health rules for tcp:80
- farm starts up
- elastic load balancer shows the instance of the app server on its
detail page
- I can call the app server directly through its external ip
- The e-lb dns entry does not resolve to my instance, it just times
out and show a blank page.

Any thoughts? I'm sure I am missing something
