After each of the boys are in a barbiturate coma for ten days, they start moving, interacting, and responding. With this, they begin to travel along the road to recovery. Theresa, the mother of the twins, is reunited with her sons after a successful surgery. It would have been very heart-warming experience to witness Theresa reunite with each of her babies separately.
The chorus is a call to action, encouraging themselves and others to set their own pace and start making positive changes in their lives. The singer acknowledges that they used to avoid facing their issues and self-medicate, but now they've found their own rhythm and are determined to move forward. The message is that it's never too late to start taking charge of your own life and pursuing your goals. The song ends with a repetition of the chorus, emphasizing the message that there's no reason not to start making positive changes today.
The movie is based on the life story of Dr. Ben Carson, starring Cuba Gooding, Jr., who overcame obstacles of poverty and prejudice to become a successful pediatric neurosurgeon and the youngest physician ever to head a major division at Johns Hopkins. We can learn a lot from him as we start to head into finals.

I don't care if it's a race, I'ma set my own pace, on my mark
Ready, set, go
I'm ashamed that I used to shift the blame when I hadn't done my part
Like say it ain't so
Barely even took the time to just stop and use my mind or try hard
That was before
But now I figure, why not start?
I figure why not start? Ayy
I'm tellin' you now
I don't care if it's a race, I'ma set my own pace, on my mark

The song also bears a religious meaning, with the lyrics speaking of how God has shaped the world with his hands and has blessed all of us with our own 'gifted hands'. Johnny Van Zant mentioned in the track-by-track discussion of 'God & Guns' that he began writing the song as a very religious song, before he was approached by his fellow band members who wanted to change the song into a tribute to Billy:
"I had started writing it as a really religious kinda song, and Gary listened to it, and I guess I had the words down, and Gary came back and said 'man, we're gonna call this Gifted Hands'. I was was kinda, like, fighting him a little bit, I was like 'no, no, I don't think so'. Then him, and Ricky, and Bob and everybody said 'let's try this'. So, we went riding around in a car in Nashville, went and had a coffee, and before you know it we came up with this great, great song. And it still has the religious tend."
