For instructors: This one was pretty easy to learn because of all the repetition. Make sure you master the new moves before teaching them (like the side step over, high ice-skater, etc.), and be prepared to give plenty of options during each track to help people of all levels be successful. Also, if you teach a shorter BODYATTACK format, refer to the choreography notes for the new track line-ups to make up the 30-and 45-minute versions. I am a body combat instructor and the gym that I am a part of has many different locations to teach or take classes. Almost every instructor at every gym and time slot does not know the proper choreography. I really want to go to other instructors classes but the instructors often do not know the proper choreography or have completely made up their own.
Been instructing RPM classes for a little over 1.5 years (6 new releases). Luckily the choreography is fairly close but are instructors really expected to remember (with no cues) the releases for years back?
My advice to new Les Mills instructors is to over-prepare. If you are completely confident with the choreography and how it fits with the music, you will absolutely teach a better class, which you can tailor to your personality in your coaching style.
Once the team has each discipline absolutely PERFECT, the Program Directors (the people in charge of the discipline) and a team of super-star international instructors film the class in Auckland, New Zealand in front of a 700 person class, package it up, write out the choreography and education notes and then the releases are distributed around the world to 77 countries, until they end up at the doorstep of each international instructor.
As an instructor, we learn the choreography so that we can deliver it to our classes. When a track starts today, the choreography means it will be the same tomorrow. The timing, sequence and reps remain consistent each time we deliver the track, and can use the education to help superbly coach our members to safely perform a move, improve their execution, and motivate them to do more than they could do just on their own.
