I am looking for the document titled "SCALE analysis of CLAB decay heat measurements for LWR spent fuel assemblies" by I.C. Gauld. Is there an ORNL document which summarizes the assembly parameters, depletion history, and cooling time for each of the measured LWR assemblies at the CLAB facility? We are looking to extend the limited amount of U.S. measured LWR decay heat values.

Thanks. Paul.

Dear Paul

We did an extensive study to validate decay heat measurements for the NRC. However, this report has yet to be issued, although I understand it is in press. The NUREG report is titled "Validation of SCALE 5 Decay Heat Preductions for LWR Spent Nuclear Fuel." Where did you see the other other reference? This work include analysis of all domestic measurements and an extended set of data from the Swedish CLAB Facility. A total of 138 assemblies were analyzed. The Swedish data have since been published and are available from SKB report: Svensk Kärnbränslehuntering AB, R-05-62, December 2006.

Robert Mills also presented a summary of UK code results using a smaller subset of these measurements at the Global 2009 conference.

Sincerely

Ian Gauld

Ian,

Thanks. I was able to obtain SKB Report R-05-62 yesterday; this is a very useful benchmarking report. The other reference which I mentioned is listed in the Annals of Nuclear Energy (Vol.35, Issue 1).

We will use the SKB report to extend the validation of Measured versus ORIGEN-ARP predicted decay heat values separately for BWRs and PWRs. We currently have a "best-estimate" and "95/95" estimate of the measured decay heat value based upon the predicted ORIGEN-ARP decay heat value.

I do have one question. For decay times less than 30 days, is there a "recommended" bias and uncertainty that should be applied to the raw ORIGEN-ARP decay heat values for UFSAR Chapter 15 safety analyses? I assume that the bias and uncertainty are unknown for short decay times since there are no physical measurements to support them. Correct?

Thanks again! Paul
