I am finishing a build of an AMD-based PC (Ryzen 9900X) to use as a Linux compute box. I am currently licensed for SCALE v6.2.4. Will the Linux executable shipped with SCALE run only on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (or a clone like Alma or Rocky Linux)? I was originally planning to install Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS. If I use Ubuntu will I have to recompile SCALE?

I have the same questions for SCALE v6.3. I am planning to get that version in January.

I have used SCALE-6.2.3 on Gentoo Linux, Ubuntu Linux; and SCALE-6.3 on Red Hat Linux. As long as the linux distribution is up-to-date, I expect that SCALE will run without problems. Ubuntu is a safe option. I have used various versions of SCALE with various versions of Ubuntu and in all cases "it just worked".

I experienced only one (major ?) issue: the Java software (SCALE installer and the AMPX software) did not always run on the most "up to date" versions of the Java Runtime Environment. The AMPX software is optional (it is only required if you wish to create your own cross sections for SCALE) but if the Installer does not work you will have a problem because there is no other way to install SCALE, because the DVDs use PAK files which (apparently) can only be uncompressed by the Java Installer software. I ran into this problem on Gentoo Linux and SCALE-6.2.3.
