The inaugural meeting of the Melbourne Compose Group (hereafter MCG) will be held from 6pm Thursday September 19, in-person at the Kathleen Syme Centre in Carlton [https://maps.app.goo.gl/17yDuQErKWTcGuSw9]. All welcome.

This is a user group dedicated to advancing the art and science of Strongly-Typed functional Programming, formed as an aspiring successor to the Melbourne Haskell and Scala meetups, organised by John Walker and myself.

Arrive from 5:45pm. We are in Activity Room 2. The main presentation will commence at 6:30 and be done before 7:30pm. There is no catering but feel free to bring a snack or drink; while there is a kitchen in the space, this is our first hire of the room so there may be some surprises.

If you have trouble with access, contact Ben Hutchison on 0407 990 094, or email us at melbourne-c...@googlegroups.com

I will be the presenter for the evening:

Topic: The past, present and future of *Numeric Abstraction in Programming*.

This is a rather deep rabbit hole upon which I have expended considerable cycles. In the session, I hope you come away with an appreciation for "the problem", the potential rewards of solving it, and a conceptual map of the topic. In particular, the value of Abstract Algebra for precisely modeling numeric representations.

There are many aspects, sub-topics, and details I find interesting. I hope you will too. I intend to more deeply cover the topic over future sessions of MCG, as time permits. I'll post a roadmap & outline in a subsequent post, for those keen to read further.

Hope to see you there :)

-Ben
