howdy folks,
I am looking for a place where I can write some scala poetry with some capable and collaborative peers.
I also wrote some verses in Akka and Lift, and I have over twenty years of polyglot experience.
the snag is that I'm looking for a mostly telecommute position (like one day a week in the office).

for interested parties, please contact me directly at benny...@gmail.com

thanks for listening,
Benny

Benny,

BASE has a forum just for job seekers:
http://www.meetup.com/Bay-Area-Scala-Enthusiasts/messages/boards/forum/3744402

Why not post there?

sure Mike, will do.
haven't seen any post there, ever, but be glad to be the first one ;-)

by the way, it wasn't clear to realize I have to join the meetup first before I can post. I thought that being member of the BASE newsgroup was sufficient.

thanks,
Benny

Unfortunately the Google group is not integrated with meetup.com. This is because the Google group and web site was set up >3 years ago, and we started using meetup.com late last year because it is a better way to manage events.

It might make sense for us to close the Google group. I'd like to hear from the members before doing that, however. Not sure if there is a way to direct traffic from the Google group to the meetup site.

So did you find a Scala job and do you have any advise to offer for others looking for scala work?

Indeed. There are also more than a few startups out there that are using Scala. Lots of companies will also quietly have some experimental projects. You'll mostly find these jobs by networking or (talking your CTO/architect/manager into letting you start such a project). :-)

I don't have any additional names I'm comfortable sharing, but there are definitely jobs out there in the Bay Area that involve Scala—either primarily or as part of a larger project. I wouldn't say they're terribly easy to find though—beyond the well known companies.

There is such high demand for Scala developers in Bay Area that I don't think an experienced Scala hacker should have much trouble. Opposite is usually true for CloudPhysics, we often have trouble finding available, world-class Scala talent.

For those who are interested in Scala but not yet possessing of experience, then as Sarah said, try to find a project to get your fingers wet. I'd suggest further to pick up any one of the great Scala open source projects out there and start contributing.

I second Irfan, we at FortyTwo are having hard time as well getting world class engineers/developers.

I believe most hiring managers would agree that the most important thing is to have an excellent engineer (in scala's case, with backend experience), not necessarily the best scala engineer at day one. If you can show superior skills in some other language (e.g. ruby, java, python), have few projects to be proud of and show excitement about Scala, then most scala hiring managers will be happy with it. I hired world class engineers with no scala experience and in less then a month they knew scala better then myself.

So even if you don't have the years worth of experience with Scala, don't be shy and apply for the job!

Regarding how to find a company, I recommend using LinkedIn for the search (disclaimer - worked there few years ago).
Search for people and companies with the keyword "scala" and narrow down the "Location" (e.g. "San Francisco Bay Area"). It will give you companies and people who work in companies that are using Scala. Its an excellent tool since many small startup are not publishing themselves in the mass job listings sites for budget and quality reasons. If you find companies with people who has Scala in their profile, its likely that these companies are/where hiring scala folks.

Cheers,
Eishay

Please add Meraki (now owned by Cisco) to your list!

Most of our backend is written in Scala (the rest is Ruby and C++).

I lived for a time in New York City. Just a little bit north of that urban prison, I knew of a beautiful flat spot among the trees, just big enough for me to lie down. Just want to say I'm delighted to have been wrong: it looks like it's not at all difficult to find Scala jobs outside your network. :-) It's been a while since I was out actively looking for a job.

Also, if you have a LinkedIn account, adding Scala as a skill can attract some interest.
