A talk by Navaneetha Mokkil

April 10, 2012 at 6:30pm
20 Cooper Square, 4th Floor,
Dept. of Social and Cultural Analysis flex space

What does it mean to produce a discourse around lesbian sexuality which has at its centre the event of suicide and the spectres of women whose lives could have been saved? What is the impetus behind the recording of the lives of two women who are beyond the pale of any politics? Through a close reading of interviews of community members conducted by sexual minority activist groups in the South Indian state of Kerala in the wake of "lesbian suicides", this presentation explores questions of agency in the context of Queer Studies within a transnational frame.

Navaneetha Mokkil (PHD English, University of Michigan) is an assistant professor at the School of Language, Literature, and Culture Studies, Central University of Gujarat.

The talk is sponsored by The Gallatin School of Individualized Study, A/P/A Studies Program in the Department of Social and Cultural Analysis, and South Asia@NYU.
