I have a 1974 SC 27 in great shape in Redwoord City. Tons of sails,
new outboard, and ready to sail. No trailer.

I don't own one now, but I did for 10 years (#24, sail 47911).

I think the boat would work great with a sprit.

Personally, I'd start using the entire spinnaker pole: yes, a 10.5 foot sprit! You can "never" have too much sail area downwind: the more sail area, the deeper your angles. With enough sail area, no need to have an articulating sprit: plenty of boats with sprits have fixed sprits (I14, 18s, 49ers, Tornados, etc).

Borrow a Melges 32 chute to try it out.

My personal feeling is that the boat runs so well that running an a-sail at all times especially with a sprit is not good for the rating, although fun.
I think the best configuration is the code 6 chutes with the long pole, then you can run a-sails or syms and be able to pole back and only take a 3 second hit under PHRF. My 2 cents.
I did try out a Dash 34 a-sail with a way oversized pole on a monday night and it was fun, but we took a 12 second hit.
