Hi,

I don't have any pictures of the installation but I can describe things and maybe get a picture or two in the near future.

First, would I but it again? Yes, I think I would. It's far from inexpensive and I think the ram is too fragile (you really have to keep water away from it) but it's much cheaper than the alternatives (the ones that actually work well) and I have found that it works well enough. I had (actually still have, it's a backup) an older ST 1000+ that I picked up used years ago and it struggles greatly in any kind of breeze or waves. The X-5 was a big improvement.

So, the installation. I placed the course computer on the forward part of the starboard main bulkhead where it stands a fair chance of remaining dry, the compass unit under the v-berth in the middle of the boat (again, attached to the forward part of the main bulkhead) and the ram is attached on the starboard cockpit backrest about an inch or so up from seat height. I used the cantilever mounting socket (an egregiously over priced bit of aluminum) to mount the drive ram in the cockpit and a tiller arm bracket mounted to the bottom of the tiller.Installation was not difficult and could be done in a day.

John

Hi John,

thanks.
This sounds along the lines from what I expected.
How many inch was the tiller bracket you picked?

Thanks,

ak

Here are some pix of the X5 installed on my boat,
The X5 steers great, even downwind with the spinn up in surfing conditions on a big SF Bay ebb. The manual recommends 18" from center of rudder post to tiller pin. I talked to a Raymarine tech and based on the light weight of the boat, I'm using a distance of 13.5". I get fast tiller response.
CPU is mounted under the chart table. Compass forward on center line under V-berth. The control head is on the cockpit bulkhead, easy to reach from anywhere in the cockpit, or from down below.
I have a canvas sleeve to cover the ram if it's going to be really wet.

ak,

I think the drop on the tiller bracket was 2 or maybe 2.5 inches. The picture John Dillow posted showing the tiller attachment looks very nearly identical to mine, he's even got the electrical connection in the cockpit in the same location. However, the control head is on the wrong side of the companionway and he mounted the course computer on the wrong face of the main bulkhead. (Not really, they're just different than my locations.) And what happened to the bottom half of his chart table I have no idea! I also have a canvas (Sunbrella) sleeve to cover the ram in the cockpit as they really do not like water at all. I'll be at the boat tomorrow and will try to take a few pics.
