Hello SC27 World,

Just reaching out here for a little advice.

Tim and I sailed Crazy Rhythm in the Delta Ditch race a couple weeks ago - really fun.  We then went full commando and decided to sail rather than trailer back.  Actually, it was also really fun and interesting night sailing/motoring...until the wind picked up.  We decided to take a break in an Antioch marina until conditions improved and the sun rose, but the next morning, conditions were even worse...and the westerly against an ebb tide made for very choppy waters.

The result is we made it back to Richmond safe and sound, but hanging and banging a heavy motor (60 pound Tohatsu) off the back in those conditions ended up cracking the housing that the stem of the motor mount goes into.  Meaning we have a little repair work to do, and we want to do it right.  The crack is in the internal fiberglass tube, where the interior tip of the metal motor mount was banging against it for hours.  The transom end of the housing looks fine.

Any advice on best practices for repairing/reinforcing the motor mount housing/sheath would be much appreciated.  Have other boats experienced this?  What is the preferred way of reinforcing the motor mount sheath these days?  What would you recommend?

Thank you!
Richard

Hey Richard,

Yes - ours was damaged too on the delivery trip south from Ketchikan after Race to Alaska.  Let me look back through my photos tonight to remember exactly what I did to repair it, but it was a combo of fiberglass and g10.  It felt absolutely bomb proof afterwards....  We'll find out after the boat's second return from Race to Alaska next month!  :)

A few wraps of glass cloth around the broken section ought to do it.

Most important thing to prevent recurrence is to shim the end of the aluminum motor mount square tubing, so it does not hammer around in the fiberglass tube. Something as simple as wrapping it with duct tape to take up the gap would work.
