Hello everybody, I'm 16 years old and have been sailing on an all junior crew SC27 out of Lake Lanier Sailing Club in Georgia. Our boat is named Super Bueno, and is hull #51. We recently pulled the boat out to do some work on it. I was wondering if anybody knew where to find new windows for the SC27. I was also wondering if anybody would be gracious enough to share their base rig settings... such as forestay length and base rig tension.

Hello Parker,

If you have the old ones you can take them to a plastics shop and ask them to replicate them. In my area we have a chain of stores called Tap Plastics. You should start by calling Custom Choice Acrylics in Canton GA. I could be wrong but I think we paid roughly $200 for all 5 windows (2 top, 2 side, 1 front).

I do not have a measurement for our forestay length. Our rig tension is roughly 27-28 uppers and 23-24 lowers. 

How is your trailer? Do you have a driver's license and a truck? you should focus on getting that thing ready to drive to California for Nationals in 2022 :) That would be super bueno.

Thank you for the advice on the windows, I will definitely be looking at Custom Choice Acrylics. I was curios if you were using a PT2 loos gauge for the rig tension, and if it isn't then what gauge did you use for the measurements so I can try to convert them.

Hi Parker,  A good base that I've used that was shared by Andy Schwenk to me was 21 on the outers and 18 on the inners.   That's a good base with winds of approximately 10-15 kts.

Here’s what I found, also from Andy Schwenk about the forestay length:

"Overall length from hole in tang on bow to hole at top of mast is supposed to be 34’8” (Pin to pin)”


I’ve also collected notes from different folks about rigging/tuning:

Tuning Suggestions

Start with 1200 on uppers, 800 on lowers, (buy a new Loos guage) forestay max length and loose in light winds. Also check and make sure mast is @ max J (as far aft as class legal) or you will not point. trim genoa to just kiss shroud turnbuckles when it is six inches off spreader tip

Set your backstay tackle with knot in it so when released still is 8% on Loos guage

When going up wind in 16kts maybe like 15%

You can make marks on tackle that correlate to Loos

Shrouds should 18 and 21 on Loos guage 640 on lowers 880 on uppers

Uppers 28

Backstay range 15 to 30

In heavy air/seas, Uppers = 23, Lowers = 19

In light air/flat, Uppers = 17, Lowers = 14

One more data point….

When I bought Medusa our mast was raked significantly (more like Andy’s 34”8’ measurement or perhaps a little more), however I’ve been playing with it over the past season and have settled on something closer to David Hodges’ (Santa Cruz / Ullman Sails) recommendation of 34.2’, pin-to-pin. Performance wise we pointed well compared to the rest of the fleet in the last nationals with this setting, but there’s also a preference aspect to mast rake - I like a touch of weather helm to help me steer in the groove, whereas others might be more comfortable with a neutral helm.

For shroud tension, I’ve realized that it depends on conditions, crew weight, the rig you have and the cut of your sails. For example, Dave Garman’s 23 uppers / 19 lowers is a good starting point, but I tried something like that in a stiff SF Bay breeze with a full 6-up crew hiking and found myself with both leeward uppers and lowers worryingly slack. For me, 25/22 was better with that crew in those conditions. In terms of scale of adjustments, just as an example I saw an improvement going from 23/21 to 25/22, in terms of how easily I can flatten the top of my main. I guess this is just to say that it might require a little bit of experimentation with your boat/sails/crew in a range of conditions.

Oh, and keep a log book! :-)

I’m running 25 uppers and 21 lowers on a PT-2 Loos gauge. I’m sailing in the Gorge, and this keeps the mast stable in high wind and steep chop. Forestay length is 34.75”- 34.8”, according to Andy Schwenk, professional rigger, and Alex Simanis, sailmaker. Make sure last step is 10.9 from bow.
