Hi folks,

I’d like to upgrade our burly aluminium pole to a carbon pole to make foredeck work easier.

Our current pole is 2.5” (2.25” ID & 0.125” WT) with Forespar UXP-250-EF end fittings.

I could just go for a carbon tube with the same ID/WT and re-use my end fittings, but I’m curious if anyone has experience with ~2” OD poles? If so, what wall thickness would you recommend (0.115” vs. 0.138”), and does it get iffy under high loads?

Likewise, does anyone in CA have a recommendation on carbon tubing suppliers? I’ve looked at the usual suppliers (ICE, Forte, Rock West), but they’re out of state so shipping is exorbitant. I was quoted $50 crating + $365 freight!

Cheers,

Nathan

ICE composits in Hood River.  They can sell you two tubes with a splice that you glue together with magic 3m glue.  shipping is cheap I had 14 of those made for me and the fleet they are totally great we had a thin wall and a thick wall made  non have broken in 12 years

What's the cost for the tube itself? Maybe we could do a group buy, shipping and handling for a few tubes shouldn't be any more than s&h for one.

when we did this last time, someone had to take point and collect the infomation and the people and collect the money.    It was actually not that bad to do.  I also did a bulk buy of the proper end fittings too.

i have an ICE pole, so im OUT.

Have a great Christmas guys and gals.

I found myself a second hand ICE pole so I’m all set, but I did reach out to ICE who provided a quote on a 10’9” 2.37" ID x 2.50" tube which was $1295 for standard modulus or $1375 for high modulus, plus an estimated $225 in shipping to the Bay Area.

I asked for a quote on 2” OD tubing too which they provided ($1160 standard mod. $1230 high mod.), but it’s only 9’6” (max length).

As David mentioned folks with the class-length 2” poles have a sleeve+splice in the middle to work around the max length and presumably to also reduce shipping costs.

Cheers,

Nathan

if i was a buyer, i would choose the high modulas tube at 2", and the splice.  ICE should have a record of what they did last time.  They come in a box about 6 feet long, easy peasy.

or a forte pole, and get a few tubes shipped at one time.  forte and ICE are very high quality, and they can make what you want, and they can advise you too, they are very good engineering companies.  need to ask about getting 5 or more at one time.

SOOOOOOO, need to ask to the fleet, who wants a carbon pole if the tube is around $1300-$1400??? (ends are around $99 each in gray or black)

Resurrecting this thread....

I'm talking to ICE about a tube and I thought I'd read the class pole length was 10.9' vs 10' 9".

Is there a reason to do 2" OD carbon. Presumably smaller diameter carbon would be stronger than aluminum.

Anyone just already have one lying around they want to sell me by chance? 😉

Cheers,

Adam Yuret

Just fyi, a new 2.5” carbon spin pole from Forespar cost me $1600 earlier this year, they are located in SoCal. As a bowman, I don’t think dropping to 2” would be a good idea, 2.5” is a comfortable size to handle, even for smaller bow peoples, not to mention that Forespar recommends the 2.5” tube for this size boat.

In 2022 I was quoted $1440 + $100 shipping from ICE (https://www.innovativecomposite.com/) who are based out of WA. It comes in two parts with a bonded internal sleeve; shipping to SF was a non-starter for a 1-piece pole. Their prices may have changed, but hopefully a useful reference point.

I'm in WA and make the drive south often. Happy to pick up and deliver to Bay Area. I'll be down for Ditch, Spin cup, Huntington, among others...

Lickety Split bought a one piece (no sleeve) 2" carbon Fiber pole from from Forespar.  If you buy several the shipping will be nominal.

$100 shipping for a tube that size seems like a great deal.

I think that the three piece ICE spinn poles in the light and heavy version are great, none have broken.   The unique part of these poles is that they have a fiberglass-cover layer that is good looking and abrasion resisted.

I think the 2" forespar spin poles are great

The Seldon poles come in a light and heavy wall, the thinner wall is a bit light for Hawaii, but fine for day racing.

The standard 2.5 inch aluminum ones are great too, and the 2"aluminum ones have been ok, but might be on the light side and not survive a hard round-down.
