Hi Zero Waste Team,
Here is a recycling industry newsletter I subscribe to - it shows the trends in the industry, important because it shows where recycling growth is occurring and possibly profitable markets.
The International Zero Waste Alliance prohibition of burning is because of air pollutants of the most commonly used methods of combustion. Pyrolysis - a form of combustion of plastics that results in the fewest pollutants and free radicals, is being used to source the type of plastics, but also to produce a low grade of oil. Articles are attached for those who want to know more. But the problem remains that pyrolysis is very expensive and not likely to be adopted due to this, and that it requires the highest energy and thus contributes to greenhouse gases. Thus any type of burning not only releases pollutants (some can be scrubbed and some cannot), but also takes a great deal of energy, and still leaves residues.
Thus, zero waste is the alternative.
Best regards,
Carol
