How One Maryland Community Is Fighting Data Centers and Defending Democracy

Since 2021, residents of a Maryland town have been pushing back against the construction of data centers. They've cited concerns about rampant energy and water usage as well as air and noise pollution caused by the generators that keep the servers cool. But the conflict came to a head last year when the town council created a new 2,600-acre development zone for data centers that would allow developers to build within 500 feet of neighborhoods, nursing homes, and schools. Now a group of locals is taking the issue to the ballot box in November.

Read on to learn how this citizen-led effort hangs in the balance.

Victory: We Kept Big Oil Out of the Arctic!

The Trump administration just attempted to lease 1.5 million acres of the Arctic Refuge for oil drilling, but major oil and gas corporations refused to bid. It's our advocacy that has made it clear drilling in the Arctic Refuge is a losing proposition. But the Trump administration and its allies aren't done trying to sell the Arctic to the highest bidder. We must continue to advocate to keep polluters' hands off our public lands.

Keep it up! Demand that your members of Congress defend lands and waters in the Alaskan Arctic.

Data Center Survey: We Want to Hear From You!

As the fight over data centers heats up, we want to know how it's affecting you. Are they coming to your community? Are you seeing prices go up, or air and water pollution get worse? Take our short survey and share the questions and concerns that you have about data centers, energy costs, and the role that Big Tech should play to help inform our campaign work.

Let us know what you think about data centers.

To Make Polluters Pay, We Need Your Voice

This summer is expected to be sweltering, with record-high temperatures. This warming didn't happen by accident. Big Oil and Gas has known for decades that its pollution would cause record-breaking heat and other unnatural disasters. That's why the industry is now lobbying Congress for a "hall pass" to avoid paying for any climate-related damages with a corrupt bill to avoid accountability. We must do everything in our power to fight back.

Send a message to Congress today to tell them: No immunity shield for Big Oil and Gas!

Even Bugs Need a Little Love

Across the planet, insects are in real trouble. For a century or more, their numbers have been decreasing, and now it's happening faster. Scientists estimate that today there are roughly half the number of insects in the world than there were 40 years ago. Perhaps you're wondering what the big deal is.

Learn about the importance these tiny invertebrates play for the foundation of biodiversity.

Cougar Family Goes Viral for Showing Up in the Least Likely of Places

Back in April, the Voyageurs Wolf Project revealed to the world that Minnesota has some new arrivals in its North Woods. High-quality wildlife camera footage showed a family of cougars feeding on a deer carcass. The videos sparked delight and glee across social media, and they give conservationists hope that the big cats are increasing their range.

Learn what this family means for the population recovery of these big cats.

US Faces Triple Threat: Climate Crisis, Economic Hardship, and Donald Trump

"Danger Season" is the name the science advocacy organization uses for the period of May through October, when North America typically experiences the most severe extreme weather like heat, flooding, drought, and wildfires that are now supercharged by climate change. This year, that season is "colliding with an affordability crisis and the Trump administration's anti-science actions," elevating the risks and leaving us less prepared to cope.

Learn how we can prepare for the worst and advocate for a more livable future.
