Hello Everyone!
I know a Monday day/night event is more for locals but this is a guys thing and there are plenty of guys on this list and more important - for all of us it's a special event to honor one of our own!
We even have some jocks as I recall from the days when football was intramurals and there was a team for every dorm, pit hockey ruled in G & H, and Manginelli ran summer softball. And the dinner is something we can all go
to even if we can't (or won't) do the whole day. So while I may think golf is almost as dumb as football, this is a REALLY important event to support for two reasons:
One of our own, Larry Roher, is being honored at the dinner that night. He ran the Polity Election Board and was later FSA Director of Ops.
When Larry set up the Golf Classic years ago it was meant for scholarships. Now Larry has upped the ante by making it possible for more people to be able to create their own scholarship to fund what they think is important at Stony.
We're not all Larry's and Babak's with the big bucks to endow a scholarship.
The minimum is $10,000. So Larry came up with an ingenious idea and got the University to allow the $10,000 to be paid over time - call it a scholarship mortgage.
But - here's the other genius aspect of it - you don't have to wait until the scholarship is paid off to own it. As soon as you make your first payment - YOUR scholarship - named after whomever or whatever you want - and for whatever purpose you want (within reason obviously) - will be awarded to a deserving student. (Just remember not to have too high a GPA requirement or most of the current Polity & Friends students will never get it!)
What Larry wants to be able to do is to announce at the dinner those of you who have committed to creating your
own scholarship. And the rest of us will be there to cheer for him and you!
So here's what to do - for either the scholarship or the day of golf or to join us at dinner:
If you don't know Larry personally, don't be rude and instead call Rick Guarino at
631 632-4873. He's the guy from Advancement you'll end up having to talk to anyway to actually get your scholarship set up.
If you want some help figuring out what kind of scholarship would make sense at today's Stony, contact me at
631 831 6062 or
jm...@yahoo.com.
Just make sure if you do set up a scholarship it's an Alumni Association Scholarship, not one through Advancement / SB Foundation. Just look at how pitiful this list of scholarships is! Until alumni support the Alumni Association, the Administration will never give it the respect it deserves. And think of how this looks to current students...sad.
If you just want to come to the dinner to celebrate and have a good time, below is
the link to register. You can also use the same link to spend the day playing golf. After you register email me and I'll get them to set up Polity & Friends tables.
Hope to see a lot of you there!
Love,
Mama SCOOP /
JoAnne
