Hello Fellows!

See below for one internship and one job opportunity at a new Boston-based social enterprise. Additional details on each position are attached.

The Missing Middle:

Small business growth is the single largest driver of job creation and economic growth worldwide. Nevertheless, there is an over two trillion dollar gap in unmet financing for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in emerging markets who are said to be stuck in the "missing middle" - too big for microfinance and too small for private equity. While there is a significant social and commercial opportunity to serve this SME market segment, this opportunity has yet to be realized given the high transaction costs, lack of collateral and opaque markets characterized by developing countries.

The Entrepreneurial Finance Lab's Solution:

Started as a research program at Harvard's Center for International Development, the Entrepreneurial Finance Lab is now a for-profit social enterprise that provides commercial banks, intergovernmental organizations and impact investors with technology that measures risk and potential among the un/under-banked. EFL has partnered with several leading financial institutions across the developing world, and has a proven ability to significantly reduce defaults and unlock access to finance for large portions of the SME market that would otherwise be stuck in the missing middle.

Account Manager Positions:

The Account Manager (AM) will be responsible for managing EFL’s relationships with our clients in one of the regions: Middle East, South Asia, South East Asia or West Africa. Additionally the AM will support business development initiatives and represent EFL at conferences in the assigned region as needed.  Finally, the AM will be joining a start-up atmosphere that requires employees to perform additional tasks as needed to support the overall growth of the organization. Position requires frequent travel in regions of operation. Home base will be Boston or in-region, details of geographic preference will be discussed with successful applicant and is likely to evolve quickly. The AM should have 2-3 years of work experience, significant travel/work experience in emerging markets, and knowledge of financial services. Fluency in Arabic or French is a major plus.

Summer Internship Positions:

We are seeking an entrepreneurial undergrad or recent graduate to join our team this summer.  The intern will be placed with our Boston-based team and gain exposure to a range of tasks undertaken by a fast-growing, high-impact, for-profit social enterprise including sales & marketing, account management, technology, and human resources. While this role is unpaid if the intern is a good fit with our firm, we are eager to build out our pipeline of young talent and will work with successful applicants to find a suitable role in the company as possible. At the end of the internship, recent graduates not returning to school may be able to extend their internship to a year long-fellowship which includes a generous living stipend and significant international travel. Our leadership team are primarily recent graduates from Harvard and other top grad schools, our co-founder/chairman is a professor at the Kennedy School and we are located at the Innovation Lab at the business school - so we are a great destination for anyone interested in exploring graduate school options.

How to apply:

Email a cover letter and resume to car...@efinlab.com. Please save both in one word document or PDF entitled “LastName.FirstName – Position Name” (e.g., “Smith.John – Undergrad Summer Internship”)  Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis. Because of the academic calendar, internship candidates will be interviewed beginning April 16th and applicants are encouraged to submit a their applications as soon as possible.

In the cover letter, please touch on who you are, why EFL and why this position.  We’re looking for a real person, not credentials; you’ll be a member of a small, growing team, so be yourself. If applying for an internship, please also include the dates you are available in your cover letter.

Please write to Emily Silberstein emily.si...@efinlab.com with any questions.
