Dear All -

A BIG thank you to all the parents that showed up for this past
weekend's BBQ! SBS is truly moving ahead!

Attendees: Lami Tsakma, Ifeoma Abajue, Obinnia Abajue, Kingsley
Ogbonna, Chinyelu (New Parent), Olawumi Onawunmi (New Parent),
Chukwuma Chigbo, Ogochukwu Chigbo, Kehinde Lambo, Emeka Nwankwo,
Chioma Nwankwo, Sola Alao, Mrs Irukwu, Lola Oyebola, Chike Ogwo, Elo
Ogwo, Uche Onwudiwe, Ruby Onwudiwe.

Discussion Highlights:
* Welcome - New parents were welcome to the SBS family. The
Bbq started with everyone introducing themselves.

* PTA Levy - PTA levy payment has been very poor. Parents felt
that rather than levy ourselves so much, we should push for more
corporate sponsorship to raise funds for the PTA to organize outreach
events such as Fun Day. Despite this suggestion, the levy remains in
place. The school needs to help with making sure that the line item
for the PTA levy remains on the 2nd term school bill.

* Fun Day - Parents expressed concerns with plans starting so
late. The Exco was planning on using BIS (next to the Palms) but
some parents felt that Kings College annex would be a more
affordable location. Parent Sola A. offerred to approach KC on the
PTAs behalf. Feedback to be provided by Tuesday this week. If feedback
is not positive, we will proceed with BIS.

Some suggested postponing Fun Day to next year but others felt
that this would only delay planning and still end up being last-
minute since Exco members are so busy. The house agreed to try for Dec
10th but step up our game in order to ensure success.

It was suggested that we enlist the support of a dedicated resource
to assist the PTA with these kinds of projects in the future in order
to avoid the kinds of delays that have been experienced in the past.
The resource would help with soliciting sponsorship, sending out
email messages and notifications, following up on leads, etc. Many
present felt that this is a function that should really be performed
by the school with support from the PTA. The Exco agreed to approach
the school to see if there was a member of staff that could assist in
this regard.

Fun Day Sponsorship forms were handed out to the parents present
and some parents responded to the call on the spot! Thank you parents!
We will be calling the rest of the parents for additional
assistance. Please be willing to assist. Forms with more details will
be emailed out.

* The Leader In Me - Parents like the idea but feel that if the
school wants to be a licensed TLIM institution, it should do so at its
own expense, without levying the parents. While the program has much
to offer, parents feel that perhaps this should not be the
highest priority at this time. Parents are more concerned about space
for the kids to run around and play, and what progress has been made
towards the search for a permanent site.

* Closing remarks: Although attendance was not at its best, the
Bbq was a success in that it provided the much-needed forum for
parents to get together and know each other better. It also provided a
platform for us to discuss issues as a unit and get more parents
engaged in the PTA. It was agreed that we should try to do this more
often as it turned out to be a fun hangout for all with beautiful cool
weather, lovely sea-side breeze, plenty to eat and drink!
