Dear SBOL/SBOL-Visual Developers,

Once again it is time to signup to mentor and solicit project proposal ideas for Google Summer of Code.  We have had several successful GSoC projects over the years that have supported SBOL development activities.  If you are interested to mentor AND/OR have ideas for projects, please see the information below.  Please note that there have been changes to the program this year.  The projects are shorter (10 weeks) and they are expanding the student base.  Please take these factors into account if you submit a project idea and during student recruiting.

If you have any questions about GSoC, please feel free to reach out to me, since I’ve mentored many students over the recent years.  If you decide to mentor or submit project ideas, please also let me know, since we like to keep track of the community involvement.  Indeed, if you tell us about your idea, we can try to help recruit students for it.

Best wishes,
Chris

Hello NRNB mentors!

We will be applying as a mentoring organization to GSoC 2021, and because of the changes to the format this year, we are starting the process of updating project ideas early.

If you are interested in mentoring for 2021, please keep reading! We will update this group to include only confirmed 2021 mentors going forward.

For GSoC 2021, we are making the following changes for NRNB mentors:

  • New project ideas: We have closed all existing project ideas. 2021 projects need to be reimagined and written for a 10-week / 175 hour period, which is approximately half the length of prior year's projects.
  • Expanded student base: The new rules allow for a wider range of "students," including post-graduate and late-career applicants. You should consider wider outreach.

Complete these tasks before December 21:

  • Add your new project ideas at GitHub. Refer to our template to make sure your project description includes all the necessary information.
  • Complete the mentor survey, even if you completed one last year.

And please spread the word to colleagues working on open source network biology projects. Let us know if you have any questions!

Thanks!

Kristina and Alex
