Organic Land Care at Reed College - Peer Learning Session
Wednesday, September 18th
11:30am - 1:30pm
Please join us for a no-cost peer learning session at Reed College. OLCP's Shane Kaser and Zac Perry will lead a tour of the campus, showing some of the organic land care highlights, including low maintenance landscapes, wildlife restoration, and more. Here is how Shane poetically describes campus management:
"Ecology-based, low-tech maintenance program focused on
carbon cycling, soil health, rainwater catchment, progressive mulching,
and sound planting design.
Miniature rain-gardens are chained together, and mingled with
nurse-logs, nitrogen-fixers, natives, edibles, and others.
Clover, veronica, heal-all, and other well-behaved rogues form
attractive, weed-busting groundcovers as they wander amongst the ankles
of hardy perennials, and reseed against inevitable disturbances of the
canopy.
Hidden shrub-bed compost piles capture autumn leaves and pruning debris
while building a thick layer of humus on the soil surface, and providing
habitat for birds, insects, earthworms, fungi and other microbes.
The maintenance program rarely requires the transportation of heavy
and/or bulky materials, and largely relies on a custom-built
bike-trailer for routine maintenance activities."
Directions:
Meet at the top of Botsford Drive off of SE 28th Ave. between Woodstock

Parking is available in Reed's west parking lot at the bottom of Botsford.
