This is my favorite:  (Stupid iPhone messed up my whole plan for this email, and it's not like I have a spare 30 minutes to rewrite the emails.)

Anyway, imagine SALSA spelled out in that.  Notice that each column has two parts: a level indicator at the top and a gradiant below.  There's often a space between the two.  That space would be very helpful with letters like 'S' or 'A'.

This one made me realize that the icon could just be a clip of the clave portion of the UI.

It also helped me to realize that there could be some background graphic in the UI, rather than just black.  This could point to ways to show OFF instruments and highlighted instruments too.  And I think it looks pretty clean.

well - the first one - what's the idea? I'm not sure I understood how you want the word Salsa to be laid over the equalizer...

The second one - I didn't understand the idea at all... Perhaps you could try to illustrate ?
