Hi,
This group has been moribund for a long time. Back when we first
tried to get it going, we had trouble jumping through some of the SBL
hoops. Then I went off to Jerusalem for a year, and my colleague went
to London. So we basically didn't pursue the matter for a while.

The question now is: do you think the idea of a Temple Studies group
at SBL is worth pursuing. We are willing to try to approach SBL to
try to get it going again if there is enough interest.

Let us know.

Thanks

Indeed, there was a "destruction" of the Temple --- studies. I do think that this issue should be promoted. It has so many links both to the Bible and the ANE. Hope you'll suceed.

Nice hearing from you. I think that such deliberations are well worth
pursuing.

I'm interested. Also, there is a conference this May in Göttingen organized by Nathan MacDonald on the presence or absence of the divine in the second temple. Nathan may be interested in your group and would know of others.

Best of luck

Bill,

In the past two years, I have been involved in the London Temple Studies Group, which has been quite successful. In London last November, several of its members and leaders expressed a strong interest in being part of an SBL program unit on temple studies.

Also, good progress has been made on updating and improving the Temples Bibliography that we published with the Edwin Mellen Press in 1991, twenty years ago. One of the projects of an SBL Temple Studies group could be the completion and management of an online temples bibliography, which I would be happy to turn over to any and all who might be interested in this.

A Utah Temple Studies Group has met a couple times, hoping to form a North American affiliate and counterpart to the London Temple Studies Group.

So I see plenty of interest and ample need to regenerate the SBL proposal. I would be happy to participate or help out.

Jack

As one of the people involved with Margaret Barker in setting up and
organising the UK Temple Studies Group, I'd be delighted to support a Temple
Studies Group at SBL in any ways possible.

Hello Bill,
I wondered what had happened.  I am glad to know you are alive and well.  Yes, I continue to be interested in helping to develop an SBL Temple Studies group.  I am glad to know the possibility is being revived.

Shalom,

Beverly

It  is definitely worth pursuing, especially since in recent years there has been very interesting new finds such as the new temples at Tel-Tayinat and Aleppo, new texts such as the Song of Bazi, and new developments in Pentateuchal criticism.

I would very much like to see an active group in Temple studies.
