It's been a while since our last announcement e-mail, but that doesn't mean we've been laying down on the job. With the warmer weather, the shop's been jumping during our shop hours, but there's more and better things we wanted to let you know about.
Without further ado...
Willie Weir adds a showWillie Weir, raconteur, actor, journalist, bicyclist, and all-around amazing dude, just sold out three shows at REI, talking about his bicycle journeys through some pretty hairy places and on pretty light income. If you didn't get a chance to catch one of them, he's decided to hold an encore of his first presentation: "Willie Weir: The Frugal Cyclist's Guide to the Universe" at our shop, this Saturday, February 20th, at 7:00 pm. Tickets will be available at the door, first-come, first-served, for $10 a seat, and we're going to try to cram 60 seats into our humble little shop.
New volunteer orientation schedule
Volunteer orientation is a great way to get a taste of what working at SBK will be like, but for the last few months, we've been
moving our volunteer orientation around a lot, holding it some weeks,
skipping it on others. To be honest, this ad hoc method hasn't really
served our prospective volunteers or ourselves well. Emjay and I are
responsible
for volunteer coordination, and even we've been confused as to whether
there's an orientation planned for the night and if so, if anyone's
going to show up.
No longer. Starting Feb. 22, we're
going to a set schedule, holding volunteer
orientation on the second and fourth Mondays of every month, at 7:00
pm. We're going to try to tailor the orientation on the second Monday
towards future clerks and the fourth Monday orientation towards wannabe
mechanics, but any prospective volunteer is welcome on either night
to learn about the shop rules and procedures. What's more, since we're
holding these orientations during our normal volunteers-only night, you
can get a head start on meeting some of the wonderful people who've
taken the plunge and started wrenching and greeting for us!
April Second SaturdayA bunch of SBK volunteers assembled a team for the AIDS/LifeCycle fundraising ride (
http://www.aidslifecycle.org/),
and SBK has decided to turn our Second Saturday party in April into a big LifeCycle fundraising event! We want to make this
event one big blast, with plenty of artists, stuff for sale (baked
goods, crafts), and services (massages, bike fits). If you've got a way to drum up money and a charitable heart, Gina wants to hear from you; get a hold of her
at
gi...@sacbikekitchen.org.
Send Lawyers, Guns, and Money
...Or just the lawyers, actually. We here at SBK know forks and frames, not so much leases and liability. If you are or know of a lawyer willing to do a little bit of pro bono work for a certain nonprofit bicycle maintenance collective, we'd love to hear from you. E-mail
in...@sacbikekitchen.org with your tip.
That's all for now. Be sure to keep an eye on our website; we're getting better about keeping it up to date!
