If anyone is interested we have the opportunity to acquire a botmill glider 3d printer for $500. I am looking to start a collection, we have raised $200 towards it so far. If anyone else would like to chip in this machine would be a nice upgrade from the cupcake cnc printer we are currently using.

Swiss,

How about you tell us how the Glider is better than what we've currently got, so it's clear it's worth the upgrade?

Its superior to our cupcake in a number of ways
1. Much quieter operation
2. Greater accuracy
3. Much larger build area
4. Auto homing and safety stops for more consistent prints and easier
use
5. Faster prints
That would be the main reasons for getting a new one, there is also the
possibility of replacing the print head with a dremel for milling. Plus
2 3d printers means we can print in 6 dimensions

The Botmill has never been used by my friend who purchased it. (He now owns a $4,000 printer, so he is fairly serious) There's a story there (re never used), nothing earth shaking, that I'll gladly share with one person. whoever is lead dog on this potential "buy" can contact me. voice is 805-567-4670.  We all know Botmill was absorbed by another outfit, and they no longer sell this model.

I would caution people to look up info on botmill it doesn't seem to have a very good reputation. Also for $500 you could build a new prusa i3 ... just my 2 cents.

Add $50 and you can get a printrbot LC kit
6"x6"x6" build area
If someone is employed as a teacher, you can get a $150 discount
A student can get 10% off

I got my high school to get one for $500 (with an extra kilo of filament and some accessories)

Looks like we got the 3d printer, woo! Everyone who pledged please send
your donations in. This can be accomplished in person at the hacker
space via cash, check, credit card or online via PayPal (our Paypal is
sbhackerspace@ gmail.com) or on wepay.com with the same. Thank you
everyone for your contributions, this new printer will be a huge boost
for the space and we will be setting up the new printer Thursday night
of you'd like to help out or watch.
