“MAKERSPACE” FORUM Tonight
Reception and Presentation
6:30 - 8 p.m. at the Central Library
SANTA BARBARA, CA – May 21, 2013
Santa Barbara Makerspace and the Santa Barbara Public Library System are partnering to explore Makerspace opportunities in the community. Join SB Makerspace and the Library on tonight at the Central Library to meet local techs, students, and inventors in a forum about Makerspaces.
A reception will begin at 6:30pm in the Townley Room, followed by a forum and Q&A at 7:00pm. The Central Library is located at 40 E. Anapamu St. in Santa Barbara. All Library programs are free and open to the public.
SB Makerspace can be found online at sbmakerspace.org, and can be followed on Twitter at https://twitter.com/SBMakerSpace. SB Makerspace will have a number of creations on hand to display and demonstrate.
Makerspaces are 21st century do-it-yourself community spaces where people can explore their creativity, collaborate, share knowledge and resources, and work on projects, all to develop ideas and make stuff. “Libraries are no longer simply warehouses for books -- public libraries are community gathering places, and continue to explore ways to expand this role,” said Irene Macias, Library Director. “Many libraries around the country have embraced the Makerspace initiative and have developed popular programs to facilitate the growing interest in making,” continued Macias.
Panelists for the forum will include:
· AJ Bahnken, an 18-year-old programmer and web developer. He obtained his first programming job through connections made during "Webtech Wednesday" sessions at Santa Barbara Makerspace. He has since co-founded his own software company, OpenWeb Engineering.
· Mike “Swiss” Bales, a co-founder of the Santa Barbara Makerspace. He deals mostly with electronics, hardware, half-bakery, making things do things they were not intended to do, and frustration.
· Ariane Coffin, a programmer and mother of a 3-year-old daughter. Coffin also is a writer for GeekMom.com and a mentor for the makerspace open time at the library.
· Jose Guevarra, a graduate of UCSB with degrees in Mathematical Science and Mechanical Engineering. He is also co-founder and developer of Crowdismo.com, a Latino crowdfunding platform.
· Julianne Walsh, a mom, a coach of a First Junior Lego League group of elementary school kids, and a teacher for the first Beginning Programming for Kids class at the library.
· Lola Macy, an 8th grade student at the Waldorf School of Santa Barbara. She built a mechanical hand for her 8th grade project.
· Library IT staffer Hong Lieu will also be on hand. Lieu previously worked at Activision before joining the Santa Barbara Public Library System.
SB Makerspace and the Library are just completing a 3-class computer programming series teaching kids some basic programming using Scratch. Future offerings may include a Python programming class for teens, and open hour lab times for children, teens, and adults. The purpose of the forum is to educate the community about Makerspaces, demonstrate some inventions, and to find out what types of programs the community has an interest in. Makerspaces are for all ages, and for anyone who wants to be creative with technology.
All Library programs are FREE and open to the public. For more information about Library programs and services, visit the Santa Barbara Public Library System online at SBPLibrary.org. To find out more about the Makerspace Forum, call the Central Library at 805-564-5604.

Is there anybody in the El Encanto Heights area (near Dos Pueblos) who can give a blind hacker a ride? I would really appreciate it. My phone number is 280-2297.
