Makers,

Maker Faire has put out its Call For Makers!  Maker Faire 2013 will be May 18th and 19th (in northern California).  Who plans to go?

Tara and I will definitely be in attendance this year. Looking forward to this! If anyone who has gone before has any suggestions about which things to check out, or how to milk the most of the experience, definitely drop me a line.

I'm going as well as the roommates and a friend from san diego. As far as highlights definitely go watch Arc Attack, a misical group featuring a pair of large tesla coils, and adam savage usually has a talk that worth seeing.

I attended last year. Plan ahead re parking, you can save money and hassle by using a remote lot they run free shuttles to/from

It is a madhouse, extremely crowded venue. Way too much to see. Food is so-so and not cheap. Energy bars, nuts etc are your friend. I spent one day, did not see everything. Inside the building last year aisles were so crowded it was not easy to move from booth to booth.

Don't make my my mistake: the outdoor stuff is cool, but is NOT the main event, so go inside first.

Last year my little start up company had a booth at the fair.  It was a great experience and we made some good contacts.  Booths are actually free if you're not selling anything.  The SBHX space might want to get a booth if we want to get recognized.  It could lead to investor contacts among other things.  Groups like Techshop and the Home Brew Robotics Club will have booths there.  My company (Uptronics.com) may have a booth there as well - we're still deciding whether we have enough new stuff to show.

Entry forms can be submitted now and must be in by March 15.

Since I'll probably be busy with the Uptronics booth, I can't commit to helping with a SBHX booth just yet.

What were the fees and setup like for your booth?

Like I said there are no fees for a booth as long as you aren't selling anything.  They give you tables and chairs, so all you need is a tablecloth and whatever you want to show off.  It might be good to make some pamphlets or something people can take to remind them of your booth but that's it.

Anyone planning on going to be sure to check out Tech Shop. http://www.techshop.ws/

Problem is - during the faire, the TechShop in Menlo Park was closed for the faire!  So double check before planning.  Note that there is a TechShop in San Jose which might be open during that time.

In any case, a TechShop visit/tour is a must for SB hackers who happen to be in the Bay Area.

Bob described the TechShop to me and it definitely sounded amazing...
