Last fall Karen and I enjoyed a ride on the Oak Leaf Trail between Milwaukee
and Brown Deer. In the past we started at Brown Deer. The ride to
Milwaukee was all downhill, but the return trip was all up hill (not good).
We explored downtown Milwaukee and found a state park at the light house at
the mouth of the Milwaukee River. On weekdays when there are no festivals
in the neighboring park there is lots of free parking space at the state
park. There are usually portable toilets at the state park. From the
parking lot you ride through a lakefront prairie and past the discovery
museum and art museum to the city park and marina where there is a bridge
over to the Oak Leaf Trail. It is about 12 miles to the library near the
trail in Brown Deer. The trail is paved, wide, and mostly flat except for a
couple of overpasses. An option either coming or going is the older trail
section through Lincoln Park and Estabrook Park and the Milwaukee River
Parkway. It provides an opportunity to stop at a beer garden in the park.
By starting at the lighthouse the return is almost all downhill (very good).
