AUGUST 20-21, 2013: PLANT VARIETY IMPROVEMENT FOR ORGANIC AG
8:00AM-5:00PM (both days)
$75.00 (includes breakfast and lunch)

In this two-day, intensive workshop specifically designed for farmers, join organic vegetable breeders, producers and researchers in learning about organic vegetable breeding and variety improvement. Presenters include Michael Mazourek (vegetable breeder, Cornell University), John Navazio (vegetable breeder, Organic Seed Alliance), and Jack Algiere (Four Seaon Farm Director, Stone Barns Center).
 
Each day will be a mix of classroom and field-based programing. Topics will include: Benefits of On-farm seed production and variety improvement, Reproductive Biology basics, self-pollinated vs. open pollinated crops, understanding genetic variation, and harvesting and cleaning seed crops. Concepts will be discussed in the classroom and illustrated in the fields.

SEPTEMBER 3, 2013: WEED MANAGEMENT

Weeds are the scourge of many small-scale growers and farmers. Left unchecked, weeds can reduce yields, require excessive labor and harbor countless other problems. Join Max Apton of Stone Barns Center as he discusses the timing, strategies and tools employed on the Center’s six-acre vegetable field to keep the weeds at bay. Participants will come away with an understanding of how to utilize crop planning, bed preparation and cultivation to prevent weeds from appearing and to get rid of them once they do.

GROWING AND INCORPORATING CUT FLOWERS INTO THE FARMSCAPE AND MARKET GARDEN

Join Shannon Algiere, Flower and Herb Grower and Educator at Stone Barns Center, as she discusses cut flower production on the farm. This class will highlight techniques of raising flowers from seed to harvest, focusing on successful varieties, plantings schedules, garden maintenance and winter storage practices. Shannon will emphasize good harvesting etiquette, efficient utilization of field and greenhouse space, and the value of tracking data. There will also be class time dedicated to creative ways of designing and marketing cut flowers for a value added market base. A perfect workshop for farmers and gardeners who want to start up or develop flowers as a highlighted crop commodity.

Practical modeling for diversified soil greenhouse systems requires a balance of inputs and production techniques to achieve highest quality. This hands on workshop will offer soil management techniques, seasonal environmental conditions, limiting factors of production, as well as plant health and selection.  In addition, we will discuss tracking and evaluation practices to improve production awareness seasonally.
