Judith,

Thanks for the information.  I just took my 2013 Tarmac SL4 back this morning to the Bike Palace where I bought it from.  I told Tony the owner that there may be a lot of people who bought their bikes from the PV Bicycle Center who don’t know about the recall.  He said that he would take care of those people if they contact him.

Here is the notice that I got from the Bike Palace:

Dear The Bike Palace Customer:

Specialized announced today a recall of all 2012-13 Tarmac SL4 front forks. We’d recommend that you immediately stop riding your bike and bring it in to The Bike Palace for repair. We’ll remove the front fork and send it to Specialized for inspection, and if appropriate, repair. The entire process should take about two weeks. We understand that this is a major inconvenience for you and we’ll be processing your repairs as quickly as possible. If you have any questions, just give us call or drop us a line!

Here’s the Specialized press release:

Specialized Bicycles Announces Voluntarily Recall of Front Forks on

20122013 Tarmac SL4, 2013 Crux and 2013 Secteur Disc Bicycles

Asks riders to bring bicycles to U.S. dealers for inspection;

provides $100 instore credit for Specialized merchandise

Morgan Hill, CA – Jan. 25, 2013 Specialized Bicycles announced a voluntary recall of the front forks on all models of the 2012 Tarmac SL4, 2013 Tarmac SL4, 2013 Crux, and 2013 Secteur Disc bicycles and framesets. The recall was initiated by Specialized after learning of an issue with the fork’s carbon fiber steerer tubes on these models that, in a small number of instances, can crack or break on these models. The recall is projected to affect approximately 12,200 bikes in the U.S. Specialized is offering all affected riders a $100 credit toward the purchase of Specializedbranded merchandise. The complimentary credit is redeemable instore for a single transaction.

“We are proactively recalling these bikes as a precaution and out of safety for our riders, which is our highest priority,” said Mike Sinyard, Chief Executive Officer. “We take quality very seriously and are working with our dealers to inspect these bikes and get our riders back on their bikes quickly and safely.”

Specialized has a standard customer service process handled through its network of independent dealers. Owners of these bikes will be notified via mail that they should bring their recalled bicycles to a Specialized dealer. The dealer will then coordinate an inspection of the fork at Specialized’s inspection facility in Salt Lake City. Once inspected and repaired, if necessary, the fork will be shipped back to the dealer and the customer can return to the store to pick up the bike. The entire process will take approximately two weeks. All owners of the affected bikes will receive a $100 store credit for Specialized merchandise regardless of whether or not their bike requires a repair.

“We intend to make this recall as easy on our customers as possible,” said Chris Menicou, Director of Quality at Specialized. “We have fixed the problem at our manufacturing facilities, we have a systematic process in place to expedite the fork inspection and repair, and we will do our best to ensure our customers are quite satisfied.”

For more information about the voluntary recall, visit www.specialized.com under Support and Safety Notices. Within the US, call 1—877 8088154 for Specialized customer service support.

Thanks,

Bob

NEW YORK (AP) — About 12,200 bicycles made by Specialized Bicycle Components Inc. are being taken off the market because of a problem that could cause riders to fall, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Friday.

The agency said the steerer tube at the front of the bicycles can break, creating the risk of a fall. It said two incidents have been reported, including one rider who fell and required stitches after suffering facial injuries and lacerations.

The CPSC said consumers should stop using the bikes and should take them to a repair shop for an inspection and free repairs if needed.

The recall includes all models of Specialized's 2012 Tarmac SL4, 2013 Tarmac SL4, 2013 Crux and 2013 Secteur Disc bikes. The CPSC says the bikes were sold between July 2011 and January 2013 for $990 to $11,000 each.

Consumers with questions can call Specialized Bicycle Components, which is based in Morgan Hill, Calif., toll-free at (877) 808-8154 or visit its website at www.specialized.com for more information.
