Dave was out with a group of guys, mostly PV Bike, yesterday and
riding around the hill. He was coming off the domes and down the
switchbacks and doing the first big sweeping right after the
overlook. He says everythng felt good but part way through the turn
the front tire just washed out. He slapped down hard on the pavement
and another rider (I don't remember the name) hit his bike but managed
to stay up. Dave was probably in shock but was up and walking around
right away. He felt his right collarbone and could tell it was
fractured and displaced. They opted to call for family transport as
opposed to ambulance. After home triage, they headed to Little
Company ER (on Torrance Blvd) for evaluation. An hour later they got
in; by this time the pain was pretty intense.

Broken right collarbone
Two broken ribs
Collapsed lung (pneumo-thorax)
Broken right elbow
and later they determined he also has a cracked bone on the head of
his right hip.

They admitted him and stuck in a suction tube through his chest wall
to re-inflate the lung. They treated his road-rash and wrapped the
right elbow to immobilize it. I got word from Judge Bob (who got a
call from Larry) on this morning's ride and stopped by to see Dave
after lunch. He was comfortable with family and friends visiting as
they prepped him for surgery. They will put a plate on the
collarbone, re-attach the bone that the tricep attaches to (??) with a
screw and pin the hip bone to stabilize it. He's got plenty of
medication and was headed to surgery when I left. They expect he'll
be there at least a couple of days to verify the lung is healing
properly. He will not be attending the Acadamy Awards. He won't even
see them live on TV. He was in good spirits, though sedated. They'll
address all the bone issues (except ribs) with one surgery.

He should be up for some visitors on Monday.

Is he still admitted? I was going to stop by and give him shit.

I stopped by to see Dave this afternoon. He looked good, but then, considering he had a speaking part opposite Kim Bassinger, playing the handsomer counterpart to Alec Baldwin in "The Edge", that's not hard for him to do. Lots of broken bones, ribs, collapsed lung, etc... so Doctor recommended "no tickling", at least until the first of the month.

Thank god he's going to get better.

I stopped by to see Dave this evening. He had just awakened from
sleep. His wife was there giving him the doctor recap. Surgery went
well; all the repairs are in. Surgery was done by Dr Zimmer. Lung
has re-inflated and the suction is off the chest cavity although they
left the tube in just in case; it comes out tomorrow if there is no
change. He has another day or two of rehab and observation in the
hospital and a lot of rehab after that. He has already been on his
feet; hip pain is not too bad. The elbow bothers him when he flexes
it. The collarbone is stable. He coughed while I was there and it
looked excruciating. He has the pain button to push to stay ahead of
sharp pain. He says he can sleep pretty well. He appreciates the
visits and well-wishes. Expect a full recovery in a month or so.
He'll definitely be checking the front tire before fast descents from
now on.

First off I'd like to thank Mike Barr for his accurate recount of my crash and surgeries, likely made all the more difficult as I relayed those details to him under a cloud of morphine. Mike is always there to keep the local cycling community informed when these sort of things happen. Thank-you Mike.
Update 4 weeks from crash:  Recovering very quickly from the surgeries, with pins and plates galore (may have enough metal in me to change stop light. We'll see.) Was in the hospital 6 days and rehab another 6. Hip came back the quickest, walked out of rehab w/o assistance. Therapist said being in such great shape help accelerated the recovery.....but I reminded her that's what got me in there. Catch-22 sort of thing. Elbow will take time (several months) to fully recover as the range of motion is limited but will increase with PT. So I'm back to work, walking and stationary bike allowed, but no loads allowed on the right arm till the bones heal.  But all in all very lucky for having a high speed crash.
On a more personal note, I want to relay a story while I was in LCM rehab in San Pedro. A nurse stepped into my room and said I had a visitor. When I asked who, she said Adam. Wha??? Adam Rybicki came to visit me? There's a twist! I didn't believe it until I watched Barbara wheel Adam in, wearing his Malaga Cove Market cap, nodding to me. Barbara said when he heard I was there he insisted on coming over. His facility was literally a block away. He knew the details of my spill, we communicated about it, to which he responded "this cycling can be dangerous". Amen. It was a touching moment. I've attached a photo that Barbara took.
Thanks to all for your well wishes and ride safe out there.
