About the Samskrit Conversation Camp

The Samskrita SambhashaNa shibira camp is structured into ten sessions of 1.5 hours each, spread over 10 days. No background knowledge necessary to attend it. At the end of this, each participant will be able to hold simple conversational sentences in Samskrit and hopefully gain confidence and motivation to pursue it further.

Why should people learn Samskrit? :
  • Samskrit has a very vast repository of secular, spiritual and religious literature.
  • It being an ancient and mother language, any Samskrit literate would find it very easy to pick up other languages if needed later. E.g. Tamizh is 40% samskRta, 50% of kannaDa, 70% of malayALam, etc.
  • Kids should get exposed to this as well. The great structure in the language and its precision of word-meanings when learnt will open their minds to greater things in their lives. Increases their IQ.
  • To preserve Samskruti learn SamskRtam
Highlights of the Course:

At the end of the course you will be able to speak, talk in Samskrit. This short course can also be used as a stepping stone for further explorations into the vast world of Samskritam.
  • Evolved and proven Course Structure over many decades
  • Dispels initial apprehension as a difficult language
  • Right opportunity for beginners
  • Unique Interactive approach for teaching conversational Samskrit
  • Prior knowledge of spoken or written skills NOT necessary
  • No fees for this course

This class started yesterday. We have 30 people attending it.

Did any of you wanted to attend, but missed attending yesterday ?

The teacher indicates that new students are welcome even from today onwards.

Nomo namaha

Santosh came today. Looks like he will come only if 4-5 kids are there. I don't think we have that many kids in the neighborhood of same age group. Also he is only willing to come a couple of days a week.

I will follow up with Suneesh, if he can come, we will proceed with him

Dhanyawadaha

Mitrani,

Instead of 2 days off (Saturday and Sunday) - it will be beneficial if we have only one day off ie.: Sunday.

Sudarshana mahodaya - bhavatah abhipraayaan ???

ह्यः शनिवासरे जयनगरस्य संस्कृत-भाष्या सम्भाषण-शिबिरे अद्यापिका एकम् poem वदति !! एतत् poem संस्कृत-भाषस्य सप्त ककार-शब्दस्य विशयम् अस्थि || माम्  poem न लिखितवन् || कोऽपि जानाति वा ? If so, please share करोतु ||

This took a lot of time! I am tired :-(

1. सप्त-ककाराः is not a Poem । However it is recited like a poem rythamically for the purpose of rememberance
2. सप्त-ककाराः is one of best method for going about understanding the sentence meaning.
3. This can also be used for understanding sloka meaning - the method is called as अन्वयरचना or अकाङ्क्षा पद्धतिः
4. I shall cover about this method in detail in the Main Sanskrit class after the shibiram.

सप्तककाराः
अस्मिन् विषये किञ्चित् वक्तुकामोस्मि ।
किम्-कुत्र-कति-कदा-कुतः-कथम्-किमर्थम्  । इति सप्तककाराः ।
एतानि प्रश्नपदानि (question denoting words)

1. किम् - this word should be taken as the stem and not just as a simple word in this context. This word potentially contains a total of 63 question words - 3 genders and 7 vibhaktis and 3 vachanams. So totally it contains 63 questions words.
प्रथमाविभक्तौ - In the first case  /Subject case this word manifests as the questions - what /who - in masculine/feminine/neuter genders. Eg. - कः (पुरुषः /पुमान्), का (स्त्री /महिला), किम् (वस्तु /द्रव्यम्) etc. as subject in a sentence.

द्वितीयाविभक्तौ - in the second case /Object case - it manifests as - which /whom - in masculine/feminine/neuter genders. Eg:  कम् (पुरुषम् /पुमांसम्), काम् (स्त्रियम् /महिलाम्), किम् (वस्तु /द्रव्यम्)

like this for all the 63 forms.

2. कुत्र (where) - this is a generic locative case question with respect to the place

3. कति (how many) - this is a question specific to number (count)

4. कदा (when) - this is a generic locative case question with respect to the time

5. कुतः (from where) - this is a generic question for the ablative case

6. कथम् (how) - this is a generic question applies for both instrumental case as well as qualitative questioning such as  the manner /beauty etc. like how Smt. M.S.Subbulakshmi sings

7. किमर्थम् (for what) - this is a question for understanding the purpose of any given action

In essence सप्तककाराः is an important step for learning as they address the first step in semantics in संस्कृतम् ।

As a linguistics researcher I see this as one of the key learning step.

Warm regards
