((Captain's Ready Room, USS Veritas))Rahman: I think Chief Ranjoes is right. Fostering better communication between agencies has always been one of the biggest challenges in the Shoals. And you've been in the unique position of having worked both in and out of Starfleet and as former law enforcement yourself back on Ornara.
Blake: True, but experience in non-Federation organisations doesn't hold much sway in these areas.
Roshanara exchanged a skeptical glance with her Number One at that answer. No, something more was behind her XO's hesitation, and the captain decided to press further to find out.
Rahman: So what's giving you pause?
Blake's lips pursed.
Blake: I'd be going at this alone. Brand new playbook. I've spent so much time working on what Starfleet believes is right... My morality within Starfleet has constantly been brought into question--either because I'm too soft or too hard in certain situations. I know Ranjoes well, and she's worked with me a little back on Shadow's Edge. But we have different understandings of how things should work. I understand I'm the one she wants to work with her. But I don't think I'm convinced I'm the one she needs working with her.
Rahman: Whether the badge you wear on your chest is a delta or a star, I know you'll always be an agent for Good, Blake. You're one of the most principled people I've known and had the pleasure of serving with.
Blake looked back at her with a small smile of appreciation--or perhaps mutual admiration.
Blake: You, too.
Rahman: That's saying something, don't forget that. For both of us after how long we've been out here. No matter where you go now, trust your instincts and what you know to be right, Blake.
There was a small moment that lingered before the Brekkian/Betazoid hybrid spoke again.
Blake: So then... I guess this is it. Last trip to Esperance on Veritas for me.
Rahman: Not just you...
Blake: I'll draw up my official resignation from Starfleet in the morning. I'm... not really sure what that looks like. I may need some help with that. ::with a huff:: I don't know what happens next. Do I get off at Esperance and never look another Starfleet officer in the eye until I have to?
She swallowed.
Blake: I don't think I realised how hard this would be.
Rahman: Well, truthfully, I don't think it *is* going to be just as easy as that, either. You'll likely be considered on "active reserve." I wouldn't worry too much about it. They don't tend to call anyone back unless it truly is galaxy-shattering...
A humorous look was shared between them before Blake replied.
Blake: Thank you. For everything. Every moment I've been on board, you've worked to make me feel at ease. I know I've been a bit of a handful at times... but working with you has been one of the most fulfilling experiences I could ask for.
Rahman: I'm glad to hear that, Commander. And I'm glad to be finishing this tour with you by my side again. Somehow... it just seems like the right thing. And I have to admit, I feel better knowing that even if Veritas and this crew go their separate ways to places beyond the Shoals, you'll still be around to continue the greater mission here.
Blake: Response
Rahman: There is just one thing.
She held up a hand to assure her Number One.
Rahman: It's not an order--just a request. Do see if Chief Ranjoes can let you take a little time off before you start working again. There's a whole galaxy out there, after all. And I happen to know you do have friends and family that I'm sure would want to see you.
Blake: Response
The captain smiled and then stood up before walking around her desk to embrace her first officer in a hug.
Rahman: Good luck, Blake. I know mail travels slowly in the Shoals, but I happen to know a Rodulan who's worked his butt off for the past few years to improve that. I'll expect a letter or two.
Blake: Response
Rahman: Of course. Safe travels, Number One.
Blake: Response
