Parker: As you know, Starfleet does not place its recruits in such danger, at least not on purpose. Having the presence of mind and the guts to fight are things which can be learned, but the best warriors are instinctual…they know what to do once trained. They don’t falter when things get chaotic in combat. They can focus in the midst of chaos. You have shown that you have those qualities, and you are also a scientist. Starfleet is lucky to have you…
Lafizatar: Thank you.
Zhanyt wondered how he'd react to why she was in Starfleet, and not in Mathenite Confederate Navy. That said, she sensed this could be a story for story thing... Well, she was curious.
Parker: Which story would you like me to tell? The one in which I first saw death at the hands of an enemy, or the first time I saw combat in Starfleet?
Zhanyt had to think for a moment. While both would be revealing, she was more interested in how Starfleet handled *intentional* combat. She had seen combat once, when she had to get an engine room together on a ship that had lost it's senior officers, and a great deal of the senior petty officers. It was a rather unpleasant experience.
Lafizatar: I think your first time you saw combat in Starfleet would be more interesting.
Parker: Response
Zhanyt quietly listened to the story, almost as if she was trying to live it in her mind to fully understand it.
Lafizatar: That.. hmm. I think I should be grateful I wasn't there. But, still, that's.. a hard story to hear.
Parker: Response
(OOC: Will backsim any more responses)
Lafizatar: Well. I owe you the second half of that tale, because it's why I'm Lt. JG Zhanyt Lafizatar and not Knight Zhanyt Lafizatar. ::Zhanyt takes a deep breath.:: As you can imagine, there was an inquiry into the incident. The Captain, it turned out, had expected the Sergeant-Master to put us in seperate squads, none the starguard, as we had a surplus of skilled Sergeant-Masters, many of whom were Archons - what Starfleet considers to be Warrant Officers. The Sergeant-Master was demoted to Sergeant, but the fact I survived was a problem.
Parker: Response
Lafizatar: The .. Mathenite Confederacy relied a lot on the fact that we hate the Cardassians more than we hate each other when we fought them. I am Diserk, one of the desert people, and a colonist. This is four strikes against me. Now, the combat suits we wear have cameras and telemetry, so nothing happened. But I was warned by the XO that I could expect no positive review or placement in any ship in the fleet.
Parker: Response
Zhanyt nodded, although her hands were betraying her tenseness. It was probably understandable, but she had a hooded look in her eyes as she looked blankly at the wall.
Lafizatar: Well.. I can't blame the Captain. In our rank structure, he's called the Ship Lord, and in our tradition, it was once the first noble rank, and he's probably one of the few I've seen who took seriously the phrase 'noblesse obliege', as it is said on Earth. He called me in, and said that if it was up to him, he'd have placed me on his ship, and it was why I had been pushed into the limited duty position of ..::Zhanyt appeared to be searching for a word:: chaplain, I think you'd call it.. But the quiet pressure of the bureaucracy would prevent that after the incident would have made me stand out to them. So, instead, he told me that I should travel to Starbase 149 and talk to then Lt. Cmdr Aleni Salchinas, serving as liaison to the Mathenite Confederacy. Starbase 149 is placed in the Zeta Pavlonis system, which is actually shared between the Federation and Mathenite Confederacy as an expression of positive relations.
Parker: Response
Zhanyt shrugged, although she still seemed slightly pained by it, if the tension in her shoulders is any indication. But by now her tone had calmed down to something normal, and she had a small smile, lost in memory.
Lafizatar: Well. First off, it was my first experience with a full telepathic Betazoid, and that was in itself something. But apparently, she had been tracking how the Mathenite Confederate Navy tended to reject colonists, and thought it would be a good idea to propose to them a program that would exchange cadets. And while the exchange program will never place any Starfleet Cadets in the Navy, the Mathenite Confederate Navy has let about nine of us apply for the program. It is of instructive note that all of us were likely to not be placed in the Navy, but for reasons that are likely policy over suitability. it is also of instructive note that they refused to let us use our previously done cadet time, so I had to go through all four years over again.
Parker: Response
Lafizatar: I can't be too upset. I'm here, after all. After all.. ::Zhanyt smiles:: I have faith.
Parker: Response.
