((Engineering Lab - USS Veritas))
Teller: Wil...why don’t you take the ladies..hand...for a minute, and we’ll pop this sucker right back on. Then you can...give it a test..strangle.
::Teller prayed to any god, deity or demon that was listening that this worked and that the arm didn’t simply explode in all of their faces. If that didn’t kill them, G’var definitely would...and probably much more slowly. He quickly disconnected the diagnostic leads and released the table clamps.::
Ukinix: G - Um - just gently walk over this way and we’ll put it back on. It’s - uh - ready to be tested.
::Wil took a deep breath through clenched teeth.::
G’var::taking her uniform blouse off:: Just put it back on numbskulls!
::Teller watched as Wil delicately lifted and reattached the cybernetic prosthesis to the glowing socket in G’var’s shoulder. He couldn’t help but wince slightly when the arm powered back up with whine, but after a few experimental swings, the mechanism seemed to be working as expected.::
::G'var hated this part of the process, the electronic tingle that rolled like a wave through her collarbone and rib cage. Scowling at Wil and Geoffrey, G'var went through few basic movements that Commander del Vedova had show her. So far the arm worked as it had before.
G'var:::Grimacing through gritted teeth::-It still takes a lot of effort to control this thing, how is this better?
Teller: Just like..we thought...works perfectly. Um. As far as the upgrades go...well...there’s a few new controls right inside the elbow….small little studs there. Why don’t you give them a try and we’ll see...how it goes.
::Taking a few deep breaths G'var tried to find her center, but there was still way too much adrenaline and emotion for her to really concentrate. Extending the arm, G'var looked to where Wil had indicated, where two small diodes gleamed under the light. Eventually, curiosity got the better of her and she pressed them, but nothing appeared to happen.::
::Tellers face scrunched up in fear as G’var scowled deeply at the both of them, then reached over with her other hand and tapped the controls. The air seemed to shimmer around the incensed woman for a moment before the light bent, leaving only a faint prismatic ripple in the air where G’var had stood.::
Teller:: Holy sh…..I mean...it works! Of course it works...because that is absolutely what it’s supposed to do! Just look!
G'var:::staring hard at Wil and Geoffrey:: By Kahless this is not amusing! What Works!? Nothing happened!
::Teller grabbed a reflective metal tray off the workbench and held it up near where he thought G’var’s face would be.::
G'var:::Stretching her arms out::-I am looking, you dumb trash pandas!
Teller: Look! Look at what ISN’T there!
::G'var looked at the bottom of the equipment tray, only to see the reflection of the Aft bulkhead.::
G'var:::grabbing the Equipment tray:: By The Light…::waving her hand up and down in front of the tray:: What in the Mugatos Horn is this...
::Wil raised his eyebrows in surprise. He took a deep breath when he saw G’var all distorted, and virtually invisible..::
Ukinix: Wow, that’s actually - pretty freaky.
::Teller whipped his tricorder around, trying to make sense of the visual distortion...and then he realized with a start why he had found a mostly cannibalized holo-emitter on the floor.::
Teller: It’s holographic camouflage! Bit like the old Jem’Hadar trick, but better! This will even mask your life signs to sensors, there’s no IR emissions, nothing. You’ll be totally invisible for about….
::Geoff looked to Wil with an eyebrow raised and half a shrug.::
Ukinix: Uh - 45 seconds.
::Wil looked at Teller, and quickly shrugged. Based on what they had done, 45 seconds sounded plausible, right?::
::Turning the equipment tray around, then up and down, enraptured by the illusionary effect of the camouflage, she tuned Wil and Geoffrey out while they continued to babble nervously. She was still furious with both men, especially with Wil, but her mood was shifting from raw fury to bemused anger. She’d still make them grovel...but perhaps disembowelment wouldn’t be necessary.::
::Teller watched his tricorder for any anomalies as the floating equipment tray gave him a vague idea of where G’var was. At least she wasn’t screaming anymore. Or throwing things. There were no emissions at all from the holo-cloak. Miraculously, the parts they had hammered together were working perfectly. .::
Teller: Right….about 45 seconds. But I mean...now, you’ve kinda spoiled the surprise. And Wil went to so much effort to put together a thoughtful gift for you.
::Wil winced as he heard his Chief say the words “surprise”, “thoughtful” and “gift”.::
G'var:::growling as she deactivated the emitter::-I'd say I was surprised all right! By Kahless I should beat the both of you half to death...but perhaps only half. ::wicked smile::
::Flashes of the drunken conversation Wil and Geoff had the night before were coming back to Wil. Limbo… the heat… Purplewhitehaven… the Mantilions! That was the genesis of the idea - how could G’var’s new arm help avoid an attack like that in the future?::
Ukinix: If something like a mantilion ever attacked you again, you could just effectively dissapear. You’ll get a massive advantage over any enemy.
Teller: Power cells are regenerative, so you’ll be able to vanish again in a few hours. Faster if you recharge them off an external source.
G'var:::Looking down at the prosthetic:: Uh huh..Does it have any other tricks?
::Teller remembered the phaser emitter and wondered if they had really been that crazy. Considering the tattoo on his arm…::
