((Captain's Ready Room, USS Veritas))

Rahman: Hello there. You must be Lieutenant Lafizatar.

Lafizatar: Reporting for duty, as ordered ma'am.

Rahman: At ease. Welcome aboard Veritas. You've been assigned as our science officer.

Lafizatar: Aye, ma'am. ::Relaxing her stance to parade rest.:: I have to say, seeing the Veritas on approach was a beautiful sight. I've never tired of seeing the beauty in Starfleet design.

The captain returned a smile.

Rahman: Yes, I'd say they're some of our best recruitment tools, aren't they?

Lafizatar: Well, one of them. ::Zhanyt would argue that another tool was that Starfleet tried it's best to be equalitarian - from a minority culture in the Confederation, she could appreciate it. She was Diserk before she was Mathenite, but often, the way the Confederation works re-enforced that division. It was an interesting conundrum ::

The captain gestured to her terminal.

Rahman: I reviewed your file earlier. I see you've had a bit of experience before this assignment.

Lafizatar: Yes, ma'am. I've had four years in Starfleet after graduation. My last posting was the USS Fidelity.

Rahman: ::nods:: I was sorry to hear about Captain ch'Sathir's death.

Not just ch'Sathir but the Andorian CO's entire senior staff save one were killed when his ship the USS Fidelity was attacked in a pirate ambush late last year.

Zhanyt nodded soberly. It was true, that being in the military meant this was likely to be your inevitable fate if you were unlucky, although far less likely in the Federation in most sectors. Actually, this reminded her that the gift she had made for ch'Sathir's family should reach them shortly.

Diserk culture, focused as it was on beauty through form, had a tradition of crafting a miniature shrine to the virtues of the deceased. And while Zhanyt didn't follow every tradition, she did follow the majority ones for her religion. She had made one for every person she had served with who died, and sent them to their loved ones - a skill she was becoming very regrettably good at.

Lafizatar: Aye, ma'am. His death is a loss to the Service and Cosmos.

Rahman: So you understand the importance of our work firsthand out here in providing security for the colonists and starship crews out here.

Lafizatar: Aye. The briefing materials I familiarized myself with indicated that piracy was a recurring issue in this region of space.

She nodded again as she grabbed a PADD with some orientation documents for the new arrival and passed it over her desk to Lafizatar.

Rahman: Here is the ship's officer's manual you'll want to review. You'll need to check in with medical and security for your clearances and then contact our operations officer for your quarters.

Lafizatar: Aye, ma'am.

The captain tilted her head slightly as she looked up at her new lieutenant, whose long, pointed ears seemed to touch the ceiling.

Rahman: Do you have any questions for me?

Zhanyt had to think. Her tone had remained formal - while the Federation was far more uneasy with how Starfleet was a military, the four years she had spent aiming to join the Mathenite Confederate Navy were too bone deep for her to relax her formalism among senior officers without effort.

Lafizatar: At this point, ma'am. ::pauses:: From what I understand, there's not much call for conventional science studies except for the long term analysis of the tetryon fields. Is there anything you would recommend I refresh about first?

Rahman: Response

Lafizatar: ::nodding thoughtfully:: The only other question is that I understand bandwidth is limited on the Shoals. I'm working on pursuing a doctorate in hypergravitational studies at the moment, so I just wanted to know if there is ever enough time to get a connection to Esperance, ma'am. It's of little priority at the moment.

Hypergravitational studies were a misnomer, in truth, as they were essentially 'warp fields, subspace, and fundamental forces of the universe'. It was one many Starfleet officers went for, since often Science officers were generalists who called in specialists for specialized tasks. In Zhanyt's case, like with the first mentor who had set her on this path, she wanted a generalist degree before she went for a specialist one.

Rahman: Response
