to UFOP: StarBase 118 – USS Veritas
((Ready Room, USS Veritas))

::Roshanara placed down her coffee mug and interlocked her fingers as she rested the base of her palms on the desk.::

Rahman: Would you be interested in staying aboard for a bit?

::She was aware of course of his anxiousness around starship travel, and the man seemed to do a double take.::

Alentonis: In a civilian capacity, or a science recruit? Granted, I have no idea how Starfleet handles their enlisted personnel...but I would like to help.

Mei’konda: Well, as I’m sure you know, all civiilians who are to be on assignment aboard a starship for longer than a few weeks need to go through emergency traiining, so you know what to do when certain alerts are called, if we’re at general quaarters, that sort of thing.  I’ll maake sure you have that training, but you’ll still be a civiilian.

::The captain nodded, affirming what her first officer had outlined.::

Rahman: I could speak with your university if there was an opportunity to have your service be part of a joint collaboration with them or if you’d prefer, it could remain a simple sabbatical—if your schedule allows.

Alentonis: Of course.

::As the man continued to consider the offer, the captain gestured towards the coffee mug in front of her to see if he wanted one as well.::

Alentonis: Water will be fine.  I can start by telling you a bit about my progress, since I haven’t had a chance to fully brief the commander since then.

::The Caitian dipped his head down to listen closely.::

Mei’konda: Please do.

Alentonis: Well, I’ll begin with the box. Due to my background in metallurgy, I was able to determine it is called reskariaehhrr, a rare Romulan type element. The name translates to “metal knife” in Standard, but that’s not nearly as interesting as the metallurgic properties. Due to the natural thickness of the metal, it is tetryon proof. Commander Blair walked inside the box and didn’t find any radiation messing with his gadget. In addition, the metal itself has a very high melting point. I am still working my way through the science logs to see if I can find anything else about it.

Rahman: Fascinating. Perhaps there’s a way we can adapt such metal for our own uses. At the very least, I’m sure Starfleet will be interested.

Mei’konda: Hm.  It must be somethiing more than the density of the metal, though.  Because tetryons are naative to subspaace, they move through such thiings easily.  The element must interaact with subspaace somehow.

Rahman: You said it was a rare Romulan element? Is it possible it was mined elsewhere?

Alentonis: If there is a party destined for the planet, it may be important for you to know I could only find records of its existence only on the northern hemisphere of Romulus. I’m not sure if it is actually present on the surface below. I also explained the prevailing theory to the commander earlier, but to recap…

::He filled them in on the details he’d disclosed earlier to those gathered in the geosciences lab about the ceremonial weapon that was said to open a portal.::

Rahman: Is there any evidence to suggest the staff has the ability to perform such a feat or is it merely myth?

Mei’konda: Response

Alentonis: It’s the only one I have that makes any amount of sense how it interacts with subspace. The metal itself is also used as a phosphorescent. :: He sipped his water and changed topics slightly. :: Now, as to what we found on the warbird, the science logs showed that there was an unusually high amount of power being drawn to the lab we examined. Over half the logs were in an obscure Remen dialect, the other half being in one of the more elegant forms of Romulan.

::The captain rested her elbow on the desk, rubbing the side of her chin with her thumb.::

Rahman: I’ll have to see if Commander Delano was able to dig any more out of the logs from the bridge to shed light on what happened on that ship.

Mei’konda: Response

Alentonis: Your guess is as good as mine. I’m still looking through them, but if I could be allowed to accompany whomever is going down, I can look for it. Commander Rosek wanted a sample of it for testing.

::Roshanara looked back up at the doctor, sitting up a bit straighter.::

Rahman: As I said earlier, we could use all the help you can lend. That said, I’ve asked the department heads to give their staves time for some rest and relaxation while we remain in orbit.

Mei’konda: Response

::She nodded at Dr. Alentonis.::

Rahman: You’re welcome of course to indulge yourself as well of any of our shipboard amenities.::

Alentonis: Response

Rahman: Excellent. All right, then, doctor, keep me updated of your progress, and do let me know if you need me to contact anyone to permit your extended stay with us.

::Now that they knew the Romulans had been in the Shoals a century ago, it wasn't out of the realm of possibility that they would be calling on his expertise in the future. Perhaps the other pieces of the puzzle they had before them lay scattered across the Shadows.::
