((Junior Officer’s Quarters, Deck 7, USS Valkyrie-A))
Arthur had a long day. His switch from counseling to medical was no joke. He worked all day and then studied well later into the evening. This was the first time he felt like his lack of rest was starting to catch up with him. And catch up it did. He imagined this was what spaghettification felt like. He was stretched out, spread thin, exhausted, and wanted nothing more than to lay in bed and—
That was when he smelled… What was it? Char? He approached his own door with suspicion. When it whooshed open, a billow of smoke struck him directly in the face. His eyes watered immediately on contact and he inhaled stupidly causing him to cough.
Strathmore: ::Coughing and gasping:: By the Prophets!
A man zipped past Arthur and into the hallway. He could barely make him out in the smoke.
Hughes: Hey roomie! ::he greeted breathlessly as he pulled another access panel off in the corridor and started repeating the process in his quarters. He looked between his coil spanner and his roommate as he talked and worked:: I know this isn’t a great first impression but I’m Ensign Gideon Hughes!
oO Roomie? Gideon Hughes? What is going on?! Oo
Strathmore: ::Finally catching his breath:: What are you doing in my quarters? Is there a fire?!
The only thing preventing Arthur from calling for help was Gideon’s cool demeanor. I guess he wouldn’t panic for now.
He watched as Gideon put the access panel back in place and motioned for Arthur to come inside.
oO What is he doing? Oo
Hughes: Ok, so I probably owe you an apology for all this, ::he gave Arthur an embarrassed grin:: but first I have an important question for you… Are you a burger guy, or a sausage guy?
That was when Arthur saw what Gideon was doing.
Strathmore: Are you… Are you grilling in my— I mean our quarters?
oO I’m going to have to get used to that. Oo
Hughes: Response
Arthur cleared his throat and wiped his eyes.
Strathmore: How did you not set off the fire suppression system?
Hughes: Response
oO Well, that would explain it. Oo
Strathmore: That’s… That’s actually highly impressive. Though, I must say, smoke inhalation should be avoided if possible.
Arthur had been studying respiratory systems recently, but not breathing in smoke fell under the category of common sense.
Hughes: Response.
