Having settled into her quarters, it was time for Janai to pass the customary evaluations. First was her meeting with the ship's Counselor, Strathmore. His office was on Deck 5, near sickbay and the library.
The ship was still new to her, so she'd left her quarters a bit earlier than she should have, to make sure she'd find the office. She'd waited outside the door for a minute or two, then knocked right on time.
The door chimed, then whooshed open. Behind it stood a young human man, an easy smile on his face, holding out a hand.
Strathmore: Ensign Zol, welcome, thank you for taking the time to talk.
Janai shook the Counselor's hand, returning the smile.
Zol: Nice to meet you, Counselor Strathmore.
The Counselor gestured her inside, and led the way to the seating area. The room was pleasant, full of decorations - Janai focused her attention on a handful of Bajoran artifacts. She hadn't much studied the planet, but she knew the basics: the artifacts seemed to her to be a handful of centuries old, pre-Cardassian occupation.
Strathmore: Can I get you anything? I’m told my replicator got some new recipes from the region.
Zol: I have no idea what people here eat - got any recommendations? Otherwise, a hot chocolate always hits the spot.
The Counselor laughed.
Strathmore: I have no idea. I thought you might know. But please, take a seat. I want this to be a safe place for us to chat.
She took a seat on a comfortable armchair, seemingly new - perhaps the Counselor hadn't been here long. Counselor Strathmore took a seat in his own chair and consulted his PADD for a moment.
Zol: Lovely artifacts, by the way. Bajoran, right? How did you come by them, if I may?
Strathmore: Response
Zol: I see! So, should we start the session? I don't really know where to begin with the evaluation - what would you like to know?
There had been Counselors in the Academy, of course, to help the students. She'd spoken with them a few times, but that had been a couple of years ago, and she'd always had specific reasons to see them. On the other hand, this was a more general discussion.
It dawned on Janai, as she waited for the Counselor's response, that she'd never discussed her Joining with a professional. Sure, there had been discussions directly after the event, back on Trill, but she'd had to return to the Academy for her final year soon after that.
