((Counselor Strathmore's Office, Deck 5, USS Valkyrie-A))

Strathmore: Feeling something is how you know you’re conscious and alive.

Arthur smiled.

Koyama: I'm not really telling you much am I?

Strathmore: It’s perfectly alright.

Koyama: Let me start from the beginning. Did you read my previous counselors notes? The parts about the colony I was raised on?

Strathmore: Yes, Vuldaris IV.

Koyama: :: Looking away :: It's in trouble. All the sacrifices people have made might be for nothing if we can't find a solution for the atmospheric engine - ::she paused, realizing she got ahead of herself.

Strathmore: Tell me more about this engine.

Koyama: I'm sorry. It's - well it's the heart of the colony project, It uses an energy field to moderate temperatures and selectively filter gasses. Its one large platform in space, rather than the typical arrays you'd need to terraform a planet as hostile as Vuldaris... And it, and the colony are in trouble, and it feels like I'm the only one who can fix it.

Arthur quickly jotted down some more notes on his PADD before asking his next question.

Strathmore: Is this project really solely your responsibility?

Madeline went quiet for a minute.

Koyama: No. But it *Is* my parents, and I need to help. It's the least I can do for leaving.

Arthur leaned forward a bit.

Strathmore: Careful not to overburden yourself while working on this daunting project. Life is a team effort.

oO Prophets, I’m worried about the stress she’s putting herself under. Oo

Koyama: It is. It's why I went back during leave to work on the project with their team.

Strathmore: Tell me about them.

Madeline leaned on one arm, trying to think clearly.

Koyama: Well, dad was a scientist from earth, working at the university of Tokyo in atmospheric sciences. My mother was just leaving starfleet. She was also in the sciences, but had made her way into command sometime during the Dominion War. She really didn't talk too much about why she left, but they met during a conference. She was the stricter of the two, and I think she ended up being the one to push him to go after his dream of starting a colony.

Strathmore: Response

Koyama: She might be. I never really thought about it.

Strathmore: Response

Koyama: The colony was everything. Being born there was different, I didn't really choose it you know? But everything I did - it had an impact. You learned real quick that people could - and did die if you werent on top of things.

Strathmore: Response

Koyama: We were always tight on resources. Especially people. They... didn't take me leaving well.

Strathmore: Response

Madeline shifted in her seat, obviously uncomfortable but she had an edgehat showed she was willing to continue.
