Hughes: No ::his voice turned slightly sour:: he wasn't a big fan of us spending so much of our time on frivolous endeavors, like that. Speaking of tinkering projects ::he raised an eyebrow with sudden curiosity:: are there any ship systems that you feel the refit may have neglected?
Gideon waited for the commander's response as she seemed to be considering her answer for some time.
V'Nille: That’s a dangerous question to answer, I suspect. I don’t think any of the ship’s systems have been neglected. I’m sure there’s places where you can tinker a bit and make some positive changes, but I came up through Tactical, not Engineering or Operations. I wouldn’t know the first place to look.
Hughes: ::he grimaced, fearing he had stumbled onto some unspoken Starfeet taboo:: I apologize Commander, I didn’t mean to imply that Starfleet’s Engineer’s work was lacking in any way. I was just trying to endear myself to you by making your day-to-day interactions with the ship’s technology easier, if I could.
V’Nille: You’ll meet the acting chief engineer soon enough. You can always ask her for ideas on where to start or maybe ask someone from Ops. Do you have a particular engineering specialization, or are you a generalist for now?
Gideon’s stomach did a small flip. The conversation with Commander V’Nille had been so pleasant and natural that the mention of his new boss brought him crashing back to reality momentarily.
Hughes: Well, technically speaking, I majored in Components Engineering at the Academy. To be honest, though, it was more of a ‘practical’ choice than it was an explicit area of interest. It just seemed to make sense because I had so much on the job experience on Veldora Prime. Honestly, I am very interested in expanding my expertise ::he took a sip of his new coffee, his face obviously enjoying it more than his first Raktajino::
V’Nille: That makes sense! Most science and engineering types I’ve met settle into a specialty at some point simply because it gets harder to know everything. Science especially. I know some engineers can get away with being more generalist and flexible. I imagine the fact that all the systems have to work together makes that easier to maintain.
Hughes: ::Nodding agreement:: That definitely played a part in my decision for sure Commander. Things on Veldora Prime tend to be so….. predetermined. I am kind of looking forward to just seeing what surprises life has in store for me, you know?
V’Nille: Response
Hughes: I feel like you’ve been so patient in answering all my questions, ma’am, did you have any more questions about me?
V’Nille: Response
Hughes: Well, some questions may be a bit more… difficult… than others, but I will try to answer any to the best of my ability.
V’Nille: Response
