Esme wanted her blocks, the ones her parents always used to play with her. The ones with the weird symbols on them. She didn't know if the woman would know what they were, but adults seemed to.

T’Ama: What is it?

She could see her favorite one from the vantage. The one her parents always said was an "ess," and she wanted to show the woman her favorite block. When they reached the spot of the floor, the woman had set her down and then sat herself near her. She immediately reached out for the one with the "ess." Pulling it close she put the corner of it in her mouth.

T’Ama: Ah, the wooden cubes with letters on them. I’m told that is a very traditional human children’s toy.

Esme looked up at her, a single hand reaching out. She paused for a moment, did the woman want it? Was she going to take it forever? Pondering on whether she would lose the block, she decided to take a risk and reached out with both hands holding the block and set it in the woman's hand.

T’Ama: Essssssss.

Esme: Eefff.

Esme watched in wonder as the woman took other blocks, placing them in a row and flipping them around, spelling out...something.

T’Ama: ::slowly:: Tuh-ah-mah.

She looked at the blocks again, the sounds her parents had associated with the various symbols the woman was now saying as well. She wondered, briefly, if all adults knew these codes. She decided to try to repeat the sounds back to the woman.

Esme: Tah-mah.

Thinking she got it right, she smiled and slapped her hands together, proudly. It was the same sounds she'd said to her earlier and she wondered if that was what the woman was called. She knew her parents called each other different sounds from what they wanted her to call them. And she knew she had her own sounds.

T'Ama: response

Esme looked at the door to the big room, the one that went outside where she'd gone just a few times. The one where there were other people. She suddenly had an urge to see other people now that she was meeting one new one, could she meet others?

She stood, wobbly, barely able to keep balance, and took a couple steps towards the door that hissed, reaching out with her hands. But it was only a couple steps before she lost her balance and plopped back down on her backside. She looked over her shoulder at the woman, one hand outstretched, still reaching for the door.

T'Ama: response

Esme: ::swinging her arm towards the door while still looking back at T'Ama:: Dah-dah.
