((First Officer’s Office, Deck 3, USS Chin’toka))

Once the sound stopped, Is’Kah resumed standing at attention. Zhen ear was ringing loudly, nearly drowning out T’Ama’s voice.

Is’Kah: In my zeal to care for my officers, I ended up doing something opposite.

T’Ama: :raising an eyebrow:: Oh, is that what you thought you were doing?

Is’Kah: I will accept any decision you deem appropriate.

T’Ama: Damn right you will. But before we get to that, I’m going to explain to you what exactly you did wrong.

Is’Kah: Yes, ma’am.

T’Ama: I just had someone in here reporting you for racial discrimination because you singled her out, made her feel like her species’ sensitivity to sound was a liability to the crew and that she needed to fix that with medication or sound dampening equipment. Both of which would probably be like forcing her to live with a disability to her species. All because what? You decided you know better than Starfleet medical doctors, who don’t think what happened precludes her from duty? Do you understand the problem with that?

Guilt flashed through Is’Kah, but zha didn’t let it show as the petite officer remained at attention.

Is’Kah: That was not my intention, ma’am.

T’Ama: I don’t care what your intentions were, Lieutenant. It is not appropriate for you to think you have the knowledge or authority required to order someone to submit to unneeded medical intervention in order to shore up some perceived tactical weak point. You are not a medical doctor. Furthermore it goes against what the Federation stands for, what Starfleet stands for, and the philosophy of IDIC. What would have happened if you suddenly found yourself in a situation where only Kazleti have the sensitivity to hear an alien and get you free of the situation but you hamstrung her ability to do that?

Those points had escaped Is’Kah’s thought pattern. Zhen mouth felt dry when zha started speaking.

Is’Kah: An unacceptable danger to the crew, ma’am.

T’Ama: You cannot optimize for every eventuality. Part of embracing diversity is accepting that every species has its own strengths and weaknesses and those depend on the situation. That’s why diversity is a strength in itself. That’s why logic that’s not tempered with compassion and empathy, can be used to justify atrocities, and cruelty. You need to think about how your words and actions might affect people before you say or do them, so at least you can make the conscious choice to do something they won’t like.

Is’Kah: Yes, ma’am.

T’Ama: I’m requiring you to complete racial sensitivity training and additional managerial training. And I’ve temporarily reassigned Lieutenant Seleya to the Operations department to let the situation cool down. Dismissed.

Is’Kah did a regulation-perfect about-face and left the office. There certainly were a lot of things to meditate on, starting with why zha thought it was a good idea to skip to the end point instead of doing the legwork to learn about the officers under zhen command.

oO You have got to stop introducing yourself to first officers by being in trouble. Oo
