“Checking In: Prologue: Pt. II”

((Secure Entrance, Assembly Bay Beta, Starbase One))

He stepped out of the shuttle and felt the air hit him – it was almost metallic. He walked along from where he’d been dropped and passed through a long corridor which gave a view over the Valkyrie.

She was smaller than he’d expected up close; still enormous, but smaller than expected. She was still hugely impressive though, her refit had perhaps modernised her look but she looked clean, sleek and above all – tough. He took that as a positive given this was to be his home for the foreseeable future.

Worker crews were still putting the final touches to her before she launched. It felt odd as this might be the last time in a long time he saw the vessel from the outside.

He followed the signs for the access gantry to the ship and could see a group of gold uniformed figures ahead of him – two stood more prominently than the others.

As he approached one stepped forward to address him.

Frost: Hold there, Crewman – this area is restricted.

Wolf had expected as much – it was to be his area after all. The one who addressed his was a Chief Petty Officer – possibly the watch commander. It was impossible to know if they pertained to the Starbase or the Valkyrie herself.

Regardless he stepped forward and presented his orders.

Rasmussen: Crewman Wolfgang Rasmussen reporting for assignment, Chief.

He handed them the PADD across to the security chief who reviewed it, his stoic face softening slightly.

Frost: Ah, one of us – good man. As you’ll be aware then, we’ll have to go through some details…Petty Officer Arden here will take you through the specifics.

Rasmussen: Aye Chief, thank you.

Arden: Place your hand on the scanner and look into the imager.

Wolf did as he was instructed. It wouldn’t be the best photo but they never were. The imagers moved up and down slightly and side to side as a shimmer of blue light emanated from the screen his palm was placed on. Checking fingerprints, biometric characteristics, retinal scans and numerous other details. The operating officer seemed satisfied and the absence of any alarms or raised eyebrows was encouraging.

Even though he knew he was right to be here, the nerves were still strong.

The man opened a case, took out a tissue sampler, and loaded a small cartridge.

Arden: I’ll need a blood sample from you too, Crewman – biological screening. I’ll check you bags while that runs.

Wolf nodded – this wasn’t totally unexpected but it was still new. He had become aware during his training of additional checks that had been put back in place to address issues that might pertain to biological contamination and Changeling infiltration – especially after everything that had happened the year before. It wasn’t going to be foolproof, nothing ever was, but it was a deterrent.

He rolled up his sleeve and felt a sharp scratch as the Petty Officer took the sample and inserted the cartridge into another device. It flashed a few times and after a moment off stillness returned several green lights and an affirmative bleep. The man nodded and also handed the holdall back to Wolf.

Arden: Thank you. ::Turning to his colleague:: Everything checks out, Chief.

Frost: Papers are all in order too. ::Handing the PADD back to Wolf:: You may have to go through all that again once you get aboard but I’ll leave that to the officer in charge. I’d advise you get your clearances updated immediately – it’ll make life easier. Do you know where the security offices are?

Wolf thought for a second. He had received some initial plans of the ship, and he’d done his best to take them in, but in the moment, they had somewhat deserted him.

Rasmussen: Deck…nine.

It almost came out as a question but not quite – he felt more confident once he’d said it out loud.

Frost: Good…good. I’m not sure if your division head is aboard but… ::Turning to Arden and smiling::…he won’t miss Lieutenant Xiron will he?

Arden: ::Smiling back:: That depends on which one you mean, Chief. I think the crewman will be wanting the one with the purple Trill spots – the Lieutenant is very distinctive.

Wolf raised his eyebrows in both acknowledgement and curiosity.

Frost: Well, we’ll not keep you further. On you go.

Rasmussen: Thank you Chief.

Wolf passed through the check point and was hanging his bag back over his shoulder as he heard his name being called.

Frost: Rasmussen!

He turned back towards the check point – had he forgotten something?

Rasmussen: Yes Chief?

Frost: Welcome to Starfleet.

Wolf nodded back and resumed his walk towards the ship.
